Clueless about honors... help?

CC AdminCC Admin 29516 replies2985 threadsAdministrator Senior Member
In a letter UMich sent me after I was admitted to LSA, it says, "Students who would like to ensure that they are considered for Honors may request a review of their file by writing to the Program at 1330 Mason Hall, or by sending an email message as soon as they have been admitted to LSA."

Well I didn't get this letter till a few days ago, so so much for writing an email as soon as I get admitted, but I'm actually just curious as to what my chances would be if i did write to them. My feeling is that it would be a huge shot in the dark given the fact that they never contacted me about the Honors program during the app process. Is that right to assume? Also, after writing the email, what would getting in entail? Is there an essay or something I need to write? Is there a cutoff for what kind of stats I need? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah idk why the university waited that long. I would suggest calling them ASAP tomorrow. I am doing the honors program and yes there is an essay. Its optional, but i think if you right it they are much more likely to accept you. Basically the honors program is 500 kids, top 10% of the LSA class. You get access to honors class (before regular students) which are usually a little smaller and taught by the best GSI or the professor himself (or herself). The biggest draw for me was that the honors kids get to live together in the South Quad dorm which i right on central campus instead of be like zoo-like atmosphere (not to say honors kids dont have fun, they just might be a little more respectful). Call them ASAP and see what they think you should do.

kb, you only thought squad was a zoo because you came to my room. We found out on the last day of school there was a homeless guy living under the futon living off of our discarded pizza and Lucky Kitchen. He was cool though, so we didn't kick him.

Yes indeed. A lot of really abnoxious athletes on the upper floors though, so maybe a little too social up there.. Many are cool, but a lot of them keep the dorm awake. There are facebook groups dedicated to how obnoxious the baseball players on the 5th floor are. (honors was confined to floors 1 through 4 this year).

Also, I've already registered for the regular LSA orientation. Do I have to re-register as an honors student for the honors orientation?

yes and yes i believe. Honors orientation is just a subset of regular orientation though. technically you could just go with the honors kids when you were there and nobody would know the diff i dont think.

You're forgetting the advising appointments. Just call up and get it fixed. (And my bank account is full. Thanks again.)

Honors orientation and LSA orientation are different...when yuou get to EQ, you'll get a schedule that can differ based on your academic unit. You can't switch in-between schedules though.

Yeah, they'll let you know that the Honor's program is full and that they don't have anymore room.
