Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Never took.
ACT (breakdown): 36 Composite (35 Math, 36 Everything Else); 12 Writing
SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Physics, 800 World History (Never actually studied world history)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: Whatever the maximum is
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A but about 1/45
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Calculus AB (5), AP Physics C (Mechanics, E&M), AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics
IB (place score in parenthesis): French B SL (6), Math HL, Physics HL, Biology HL, Chemistry HL, English Lang/Lit SL
Senior Year Course Load: Weird system but 5/9 actual credit courses: English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Data Management
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Two-time Intel Finalist and Grand Award Winner (from Canada), Google Science Fair, Sanofi BioGenius, National Science Fair Winner, several prestigious international leadership and science awards (also multiple national ones), Regional Debate Awards, Regional Science Olympiad (we cannot progress higher for either activity)

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Heavy on invention and research; self-initiated both projects and contacted professors to work in their labs, multiple awards. Prime Minister of School. Prestigious historical award to visit battlefields of Europe. Junior Achievement Company (VP Finance). International Competitor in skiing. Varsity Debate (Captain), Science Olympiad (Captain). EV Club Founder.

Job/Work Experience: Intern at regional technology accelerator (self-initiated); Founded blockchain startup (~8000 USD current profit).
Volunteer/Community service: Vice-Chair of Community Foundation Youth Committee, Canadian Cancer Society Representative, Mayor's Youth Leader, Altar Serving. Over 400 hours total.
Summer Activities: Continued research, SHAD (selective Canadian educational program), French immersion programme, continued work on startups, playing sports

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Not sure how anybody can rate their own essays. I spent a lot of time and had four separate people comprehensively edit them.
Common App: About creating a water filter for developing countries (which I have won several awards for) and how engineering is about improving the lives of others
Activities Paragraph: talked about research and how it's developing solutions for different problems
Why Michigan: talked a lot about how it applied to my prior work and business experience with specific course references, etc.; thought it showed interest

Ross Preferred
Business Issue: talked about lack of applicable skills in the workforce and how it relates to the skilled trades and auto industry in my hometown and how i've seen that firsthand with startups, etc.
Artifact: Research infographic, talked about self-initiating research in a lab to work on Zika virus without having taken bio or chem (also went to ISEF for this)

What Matters: Talked about my community and helping newcomers including playing hockey with Syrian refugees, etc.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Waived rights to all so can't say about how good they are.

Teacher Rec #1: IB Chemistry Teacher/Principal
Teacher Rec #2: English Teacher: know this one is for sure great, he has provided my references which helped me win several prestigious awards, have great relationship and very thankful for him
Counselor Rec: New as counselor but has known me for several years, probably pretty good
Additional Rec: Supervisor for youth committee I was at
Interview: Pretty good, there was slight language barrier but we connected well and spoke for about an hour and a half about a lot of different things. Like others, would never call this an interview.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
Intended Major: Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical, Management) with Ross Preferred Admission
State (if domestic applicant): N/A
Country (if international applicant): Canada
School Type: Private (but not feeder/magnet, just local school)
Ethnicity: Indian/British
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Doubt I qualify for any financial aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (Hispanic through grandfather)

Strengths: Academics at basically maximum. Honestly I have to say I dedicated myself completely to engineering and thought I did have a pretty strong application, everything fit into engineering and how I talked about how engineering is about improving our society, bringing in to the community stuff.
Weaknesses: High income? Ranked at ISEF but not 1st/2nd place? Maybe they thought I was bs'ing my activities?

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: To be honest, I gave it everything and have pursued activities that use engineering for basically all my free time. I can't really fit anything more into my schedule so glad to see it paid off.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Stanford for engineering.

General Comments: Glad I got in and my effort paid off. Hopefully Ross works out as well. Will see what responses I get from the other elite US schools.

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): N/A

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): FBLA (President), Model UN (Secretary), Golf Team (Captain), Debate Team, Math League, NHS
Job/Work Experience: Founded an online sneaker reselling business when I was in middle school. Been running it ever since then with $500k+ in sales over the years. Multiple news articles have been published featuring my business including Forbes and Yahoo Finance. Interned as a blockchain researcher at an IT company. Worked as a website administrator at a cryptocurrency trading software company.
Volunteer/Community service: Peer tutoring, volunteered as a recreational activities director at my local elderly care facility.
Summer Activities: Business Leadership Academy at a local college, self-studied AP Macro/Micro Economics, continued working on my business/internships, etc.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8-9/10 -- I worked really hard on all my essays, especially the Why UMich supplement. They aren't gonna make you cry or burst out in laughter but they are personal and unique to me.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I waived my rights to see them so I have no idea.

Teacher Rec #1: AP Stats teacher - 6/10. Did decently well in her class but didn't really communicate with her outside of class.
Teacher Rec #2: FBLA advisor and Finance teacher - 8/10. Got an A+ in her class and was in constant communication with her (mostly for FBLA stuff though). She knew about my other activities and was hopefully able to speak about that as well as my performance in her class.
Counselor Rec: 7/10
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Undecided for LSA. Also applied for business at Ross.
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 200k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope.

Reflection

Strengths: Extracurriculars, particularly my sneaker business. Essays.
Weaknesses: GPA, LORs could have probably been better.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My grades were good enough to not get me rejected off the bat but my ECs and essays were unique enough to get me in.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Rutgers - Business, Indiana University - Kelley, Babson College, Tulane - Freeman.
General Comments: The college process is weird. I saw tons of people with MUCH higher stats than me get deferred. High stats do not guarantee admission, especially at selective schools. There is a lot of factors you CANT control... so try to focus on the things that you CAN control.

Summer Activities: Volunteered at summer science camp, interned at Ophthalmology Institution
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9

"Why Michigan?" Essay: 10/10 Easily my best. I have always loved Michigan and although the prompt asks what about the program attracts me, I wrote more generally about Michigan. It was very honest and heartfelt and I did also discuss the program at the end.

Extracurricular Essay: 9/10 I think this one was good but it is so short that I struggled to fit everything in well. I think I emphasized what was needed well and I think my main point, that I wanted to continue making a difference, came across well

Community: 8/10 As someone who isn't very diverse I think this was my most difficult essay. I had to get creative but I found a community that was a little bit of a stretch (Possibly) but one that I showed leadership in.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Chemistry Teacher (Intended Major), Likely strong, teacher is very smart and a good writer. Spoke to me as a student
Teacher Rec #2: Spanish Teacher and Gender Equality Group Sponsor, Most likely very good. Knows me as a person well, as a student, and as a leader.

Summer Activities: Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes (Electrical/Optical Engineering); church mission trip to New Mexico (working with the Navajo)
Essays (rating 1-10, details): uhhhh... good question. I think my essays were okay. For my common app, I wrote about making dumplings and what that has taught me and how it reflects my life. For my activities essay, I wrote about taekwondo. For the Communities Essay, I wrote about my church and how it's unique (it's a Chinese church). For the why school or college, I thought it was good because I talked about a certain professor who had research that I was super interested in.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I think this was a strong point on my application. 9 or 10

Teacher Rec #1: My research and seminar teacher. She is amazing and our class is small so she knows us all very well. 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: My APUSH and World History teacher. He told me he talked about my critical thinking skills and how I love making connections between civilizations. I think this rec shows that I'm well rounded and have an open mind. 10/10
Teacher Rec #3: My AP Chem teacher. I'm not really sure about what she wrote, but I did well in her class and according to her current students she still talks about/brags about me (?) so I guess that's a good thing 8.5/10
Counselor Rec: This one is the one that was probably very generic because I have a new counselor this year who kind of knows me but not that well so...
Additional Rec: Taekwondo Coach. He showed me the recommendation after he submitted it and it really pointed out my interactions with other students and helping others. 9/10
Interview: It was good, but I had to drive like an hour and a half to get to the interview and I was a little tired, but overall it was good. 8/10

Strengths: I have pretty good stats and really good recommendations and shows how I really love helping others and communicating with others
Weaknesses: I don't think I really stand out in one part of my life or area of expertise
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think it was because I was well rounded; my essay also showed great interest in the school
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UofSC (Accepted); UofSC Honors (Accepted); Stanford (Rejected)
