Finance major

My daughter is considering finance major at U-Mich. She visited the college with my wife.

It turned out perspective students do not choose major until their sophomore year. They apply initially to the college of arts & science and during the sophomore year they can apply to Ross school of business. Our concern is that we don't know probability that my daughter will get to the school of business. And if she does not get into Ross we won't know what to do then. There is no other major she wants to explore at U-Mich.

We are not MI residents, unlikely to qualify for any need based aid and we were told there is very small merit based aid available. Therefore we see otherwise great choice of U-Mich as a very risky proposition: even if she is admitted initially then there is second admission stage to Ross business school and finance major and we don't know how likely it will happen.

Can somebody who was or is in similar situation provide any input or advise?

You can apply as a direct admit out of high school. If she's not admitted as a freshman you can not apply again, therefore you will know if she can focus on finance at Umich or not.

Note that college students who have taken the proper prerequisites for Ross with a high enough GPA (around 3.6 I believe) are generally admitted. Ross pre-admit decisions come out later than LSA decisions.

Definitely talk to an advisor in admissions about this. There is a dedicated advisor for your daughter's HS, just reach out and they will put you in touch. We found them very helpful.

This is an old thread. But just in case .... Ross (the business school) does not have majors. It is a BBA - a general business degree. Kids do take sets of classes to specialize. They have great finance placements relative to most b schools. As others have pointed out, you can also do LSA Econ and get finance jobs and Math also has a finance track now.

Math 423 is Mathematics of Finance. It’s one class in UMich’s various math programs.

Ross also offers a minor program.
