Scholarship Application

cshell2cshell2 940 replies11 threads Member
The UMN website lists multiple scholarship opportunities and states that no additional application is necessary, that they use your application for admission to apply for them all.

I'm trying to figure out how that works! I was scrolling through the scholarships and there are ones like "for members of such and such credit union", or "for students whose parents or grandparents worked at or retired from X". How the heck do they get that kind of info from the application for admission? Were we actually supposed to have gone through the scholarships ahead of time and mentioned all this stuff? Does something come out later asking for supplemental info for scholarships we MIGHT qualify for?

My S got another update about those specific scholarships and you could check boxes if any applied to you. He got it 9 days after getting the update about admission. Here's what it said:

"Congratulations once again on your admission to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities!

In addition to the University's competitive academic scholarships, a small number of scholarships funded by private donations are available to freshmen. These privately funded awards give preference to students who display strong academic performance and who meet certain criteria.

To notify us whether you meet the criteria for any of these privately funded awards, please visit: z.umn.edu/PrivateScholarships."

The email was entitled "Action Needed: U of M Scholarship Consideration."

    Hope that helps.

Hmmmm...DS was accepted for admission back in early October and has not said anything about a scholarship email. He is so horrible about reading that stuff that I wonder if he just missed it.

(Mental note for next child to do as others have suggested here and have a separate and shared email address for college application stuff.)

@chardonMN - Thank you for that link. I was going to tell DS to look for the email, but I just clicked the boxes that pertained to him and submitted it myself.

Is there a place online you can look to see if there is a scholarship awarded. I looked on the financial aid section but did not see anything listed.

We got something in the mail today that my daughter got a university wide National Scholarship. I'm guessing it must have been posted on her portal but I don't know.

I did get an email from USPS today that lists what mail I’m going to get for the day and a scholarship letter was included but I guess nobody actually delivered the mail today. So we will have to wait to see how much it is for.

We also received a letter in the mail today. D20 received the National as well. I snooped around the portal last night and found nothing, so I'm guessing it's snail mail only?

Has anyone from WI gotten a scholarship yet? I'm a little concerned that my son hasn't gotten anything yet. He got in the last weekend of September to CLA and has some pretty solid stats...but has not yet heard anything by the way of scholarships. He filled out the scholarship application questions quite a while back.
I know we shouldn't be so worried, but it's difficult hearing all of the scholarships others are getting when he's heard nothing.

@mamadtb - It looks like everyone is getting the National scholarship and that is only for out of state students. Residents of MN and the reciprocity states are excluded from getting that. The largest National scholarship basically brings the cost of tuition down to about that of in-state.

Poking around the MyU page (Key Links > Student Center > Communication Center), we were able to find a letter stating that S20's FAFSA has been received. It states:
We will begin sending estimated financial aid offers in mid-February. Your estimate will include any scholarships, grants, loans, and other financial aid you may be eligible to receive if you choose to attend the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

So I think it's true that only the National scholarship notifications have gone out, and the other stuff will show up in February or March.

The people who are getting scholarships are OOS. Even with the $15,000 a year it still costs more than for someone from Wisconsin. A Wisconsin resident has both Minnesota and Wisconsin for instate rates. In our case, being from Illinois, we are only 2 hours from Madison and that’s closer than Champaign. We applied to Wisconsin and I’m guessing if we are accepted we won’t get $15,000 a year.

It was discussed earlier but Minnesota waived their application fees for Illinois residents. There seemed to be a big effort to get kids from Illinois.

We are from IL and my son got a $10,000 scholarship. I was hoping for $15,000 to make up for the tuition increases.

Thanks, guys! I was so narrow scoped on seeing only that others were getting scholarships that I didn't take note that it was only the National Scholarship that brings everyone else down close to the reciprocity rate.
I appreciate you guys quite a bit

Very pleasantly surprised to get Minnesota Scholarship info in the mail today. We are also OOS. Daughter awarded $15,000 National Scholarship and the $7,500 Gold Scholar Award (pending National Merit Finalist) and can earn $1,000 a year additional National Merit Scholarship. Came with a nice little certificate. Makes Minnesota a very strong candidate for my daughter.

Did you ever figure out if this is listed somewhere on line or only by mail? Thanks so much!

MY DD got thee at same scholarship offer. We are also from IL.

Guaranteed honors housing makes this a good contender.

We are MN residents and our DD got an Iron Range Scholarship for 3k a year for 4 years. She is accepted to CSE for bio medical engineering. Exciting!

We got a scholarship notification in the mail this week, too. (In-state, and it was a college-specific scholarship.) No indication that it was coming until it showed up, so it was a nice surprise.

@myrna97 - Nothing in the communications area in the portal? DS got a scholarship from UMD last week, but I knew it was coming for a few days due to them putting a copy in there first.
