ACCEPTED :] In-state!
• sfaitht7sfaitht7 Registered User Posts: 76 Junior Member
Decision: Accepted In-state (Merit candidate)

Objective:
• SAT I (breakdown): 2390 (790 M)
• ACT: didn’t submit
• SAT II: 800 Math 2, 780 US History
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.995
• Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/70
• AP (place score in parenthesis): AB (4), Euro (5), Studio Art 2D (4), US (5), Lang (5), Bio (5), BC (5) with AB Subscore (5)
• Senior Year Course Load: 8 AP Classes, Honors Rhetoric (required). Hardest that our school has ever seen, by far.
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, AP something, Rensselaer Medalist, nothing special
Subjective:
• Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Piano, piano, piano. Church pianist and organist (in charge :D), Interlochen Arts Camp, accompanist, beginning piano teacher, play with my school orchestra on piano/violin, local county music club (president). Varsity Soccer: 9-10, Club/Varsity Swimming: 9-10 (placed at county, made it to states and such), and Varsity XC 11-12 (county and regionals and stuff). Then the standard Student Council, NHS, Beta Club, tutoring, Mu Alpha Theta, TA, youth group member, academic team.
• Job/Work Experience: just tutoring and teaching piano a bit. not sure if that counts. they didn’t see the new internship I have at the local paper.
• Volunteer/Community service: Many, many hours at my church each week.
• Summer Activities: Interlochen Center for the Arts!- Classical Piano before 10th and 12th grade. God I love Interlochen :) and my club swimming and running during the other summers, besides mission trips to Mobile and Charleston.
• Essays: Common App was okay, an overly-sentimental description of my childhood best friend and how he influenced me. Other essay was about the time me and my oboist screwed up our recital but smiled and made a show out of it, so it was cute I guess.
• Teacher Recommendation: Never read them, but I’m sure the one from my Latin teacher of 2 years was great, while my math teacher for 3 years was probably okay.
• Counselor Rec: She’s not the brightest bulb nor does she know me very well. This could’ve hurt me.
• Additional Rec: Didn’t submit, nor did I submit my arts supplement that went to other schools.
• Interview: none
Other
• State (if domestic applicant): NC
• Country (if international applicant):
• School Type: Small charter (public)
• Ethnicity: Oh-so white
• Gender: Female
• Income Bracket: upper-middle class
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): In-state helps, and maybe being from one of the poorest counties helps too.
Reflection
• Strengths: Scores, depth of music, classes, and they have a good relationship with my school
• Weaknesses: dearth of leadership outside of piano, not the “typical Carolina girl,” not amazing
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: In-state and strong scores.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at WashU and Northwestern, but waiting to hear back from Ivies.
General Comments: I’m probably heading off to Northwestern next year (I don’t dare dream I’d get into an Ivy), so I hope someone who loves Chapel Hill can have my spot from the waitlist. I was invited to Scholarship Day on the 30th, but I might not go because I really want to be out of this godforsaken state. Congrats to everyone! Keep calm and carry on.

It's something about girls and UNC Chapel Hill. They just really love them and no offense especially African American girls. I know 30 black girls who applied and 23 of them were accepted. And 10 of them have either been suspended for fighting, cheating or were not even in the top ten percent of the class. One of my friends meanwhile is an African American male whose higher ranked than them, had more leadership positions and attended numerous programs there but applied early action, got deferred and then just found out today he won't know until Monday at the EARLIEST. I'm frustrated for him to be honest.

• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: A combination of standardized test scores, well-roundedness, and luck.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UIUC, Rose-Hulman (w/ $5000/yr merit scholarship)
General Comments:
I was ecstatic when I saw I was admitted this morning (it's morning here in China!). UNC-CH has a great chem department that I know I absolutely wanna go to. For my GPA, Chinese high schools tend to grade on a much harsher curve, and my high school is the most competitive in my province and is a top 50 high school in my country, so my uw gpa is only a 3.66 (we don't have AP/honors course, so there's no weighted GPA).
I'm still waiting for the decisions of a couple publics and some LACs, so I'll make my decision next week or so. Go Heels!

My browser crashed and I'm not rewriting everything but here's the breakdown.

Accepted In-State
Top 10%
3.5 unweighted 4.25 weighted GPA
Lots of honors and Ap classes(especially my last 2 years of high school)
horrible SAT score
25 ACT
Amazing essays and recommendations
Tons of EC's and leadership positions
Volunteered at numerous places
Hispanic gay male

My teacher who went to UNC informed me that it was really challenging but I personally love challenges so BRING IT ON UNC!

"It's something about girls and UNC Chapel Hill. They just really love them"

That is wrong. Last year men were accepted at a 35% rate. Women were accepted at a 31.7% rate. Don't equate the fact that UNC accepts more women with the premise that they somehow prefer women or are that women are advantaged in admissions. The breakdown of women applicants to men is huge. That is why there are more women than men that attend. But, the bottom line is that it is much easier for men to be admitted because of the discrepancy in application numbers.
