lulu:

I am surprised you were not admitted. Your stats, as a URM, would seem more than sufficient.

I hope you get in off the wait list, but I suspect that you will receive a lot of acceptances from other schools.

Best Wishes

Decision: Accepted OSS - Assured Admission for Kennan Flagler

Objective:
• SAT I (breakdown):2020 - M660 R660 W690
• ACT:
• SAT II: M2 730 P 730
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):
• IB (place score in parenthesis):Predicted 43/45 (pure BS, ill get like 40/45 max)
Reflection
• Strengths: My essays and my extras
• Weaknesses: My scores
• Why you think you were accepted: Very strong essay and extracurricular
• Where else were you accepted: Umich, UCLA, Babson

I applied for business and I was happy when I got assured into Kennan Flagler. My scores aren't that great at all but what really boosted me was my essays and my extras. I focused a lot on my essays and i did a lot of research on the school itself and i showed why i thought that UNC was a perfect match for me in my essays.

My extras were quite impressive. I was the head of a community service project in which we had to raise lots of money and provide services to under serviced villagers (i dont live in the US, but I am a citizen). In addition I had an internship at Facebook and another startup and I received a top position in a prestigious business plan competition and thats about it :). I am aiming for Cornell but I am very happy with UNC and I think its a great school.

Congrats to those who got in :)

And to those who were unlucky - dont give up hope!

I wish everybody the best of luck :)

• Ethnicity: White
• Gender: Female
• Income Bracket:Varies
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):Third-Generation Legacy
Reflection
• Strengths:Legacy Status; honest and original essays; Recs, Volunteer Work, Level of interest
• Weaknesses:Out of state, my class rank, senior year activities less outstanding than sophomore or junior year ones
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My legacy status, but I also had a lot of service, recs from teachers who know me very well and think highly of me, and fantastic essays.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Virginia Tech, Dickinson College, JMU (waiting to hear back from honors) U of South Carolina (with scholarship, will pay in-state tuition), UNC Wilmington (invited to apply to honors college)
Rejected: UVA
General Comments: I know that I would never have made the waitlist without my legacy status, but I was soooooo excited, much more than I should have been, when I was wait listed because I think I would have no chance at all. I would never have applied had I not been encouraged by my dad and one of my friends to do so. UNC is my top choice and I will always love this school. I feel that my recs, essays, and service help me get in as well, because I know the school is big on service and I was very honest and open with my essays.

UNC is a top school, and to get in you do need to be a strong student, but they also care about what kind of person you are. I immediately fell in love with the school when a member of the admissions committee said that the school cares about who you are. She spoke about how there are a lot of talented people who are good at what they do, but many of them are not kind people, and that that was unfortunate. She emphasized the fact that the school truly does look at its applicants holistically, and that your essays and teacher recs are extremely important to them.

My parents, and even I myself somewhat, thought that some of this was just stuff the school had to say to look good until we received my admission's decision. Many of the OOS legacy who I know who have been accepted to UNC would have gotten into the school anyways because they are bright students, but for most it is still difficult. I could never have gotten in, even with my legacy and grades, if I hadn't been honest with the admissions staff. I am not Saint, and this will sound corny, but I do have strong moral and always try my best to stick to them and do what I feel is right.

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted and I wish you all the best of luck! Hopefully by some chance I will be admitted off of the waitlist and will see you all in the fall. Go Tar Heels!

P.S. Sorry I wrote an essay
