Scholarship Selection Day

TanCatTanCat Registered User Posts: 65 Junior Member
Hi,

I was invited to the Scholarship Selection Day on Tuesday, April 11.

I really want to attend UNC Chapel Hill, especially if I get a nice scholarship. The problem is it will take ~10 hours flight with 2 airplanes changes for me to get to Chapel Hill.

I have a question for anyone who was invited to a similar Day for Early Notification applicants. How crucial is it to attend? Was there anyone who did not attend but still received a scholarship? What is the worst case scholarship scenario for OOS invited to the Scholarship Selection Day?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Um, sorry, i can't help you there, but i do have a question for you. Did you hear anything back from Carolina yet? I sent in the little postcard we were supposed to reply with, but I haven't recieved anything yet and I just got invited to the Explore Carolina event on Apr. 10th-11th, which really makes me confused... So do you know when we'll be hearing from the scholarship people?

I have not heard anything from UNC sunce I sent my postcard. I think that we just show up on April 11, go through interview, wait for 7-10 days, learn about results from Department of scholarships, and accept (or not) admission to UNC. Or something along those lines...

i was in the early action scholarship selection day and i think you can basically count on not getting the full scholarship if you don't go. they said at the reception taht everyone in the room will receive some amount of money, otherwise they wouldn't invite all of us and have us spend travel fare for nothing. so theoretically, your travel expenses would be paid for in scholarship form.

Hey guys from EA round of scholarships!

What topics were offered for discussions during the Scholarship Day? What was the topic for an essay? Was essay writing the same horrible experience as during SAT?

    Thanks for your help.

My topic was about ethical dilemmas that journalists face. It was based on a New Yorker article sent to us in advance. We discussed it and then wrote a response. Our discussion leader was really low-key and did not stress the writing part much. She said it was basically there in case someone did not feel comfortable expressing his/her views aloud in the discussion. I think we ended up with only about 10 to 15 minutes to actually write. So, in short, nothing like the SAT. I received a Carolina Scholars Award. Feel free to ask anything else. Good luck!

    sneakypete,

    Thanks for info.

How soon after the Scholarship Day did you learn which scholarship you were awarded? What, do you think, made a difference in getting the Carolina rather than the Davie Scholarship?

By the way, I noticed that you got accepted to MIT. Congratulations!!!!!
Does it mean that you are not going to matriculate at UNC?

    Thanks....

I found out about a week later. I'm really not sure what makes the difference, as I haven't been in contact with anyone else that attended. One girl in my group asked our discussion leader if the awards had been determined prior to the Scholars Day. She didn't exactly say no, but I have no idea. I think attending is a big part of it.

And thanks! I'm not sure where I'll go yet; I'm planning visits to some schools, and I'll decide after those.

Here's what I've heard about the Scholars Day...the awards aren't determined ahead of time, but they give out lots of them, so it's a good idea to be there if at all possible. They sent out a DVD with a writing assignment to some people who had conflicts.

Has anybody got the Distinguished Scholar award?
What does it cover? What stats are required for it?
