@Pastpower I had no idea UNC didn't ask for first semester grades. If that means they don't take it into consideration, that definitely makes me feel a whole lot better.

@techytechtech Misspoke a bit. If they’re on common app they’ll probably be sent, but for EA they don’t have time to view them.

@Pastpower The one I put on my common app was the higher gpa before my first semester drop in GPA. The updated one is on the mid-year report. Hopefully that means they don't have time to look over it or that it won't matter that much.

UNC Admissions no longer requests mid-year grades be self-reported by applicants. See https://admissions.unc.edu/faqs-for-counselors-on-early-action-decision-change/

If you are waitlisted, you can provide a transcript with your most recent grades. See https://admissions.unc.edu/questions-about-the-first-year-waiting-list/

Are test scores and grade most lenient for legacy students? Does anyone know the statistics besides the 40% accepted?

@srabinow2019 I don't think legacy hook at UNC is as strong as in private schools and definitely not 40%.

I’ve since thrown out the letter UNC sent to my daughter who is a legacy but I believe that was the OOS legacy acceptance rate. They had specific percentages in the letter I think .
We also got one from UVa since my daughter is a legacy there as well so I might be confusing the two but I thought both provided acceptance rates for legacies and neither was under 40% OOS.

@srabinow2019 I believe legacy is a big hook. I know people who are legacies from out of state who got in with much lower scores and grades than people, NMF #1 in class who were waitlisted from our school, and at the time the parents told me that they were fairly confident their kids would get in due to legacy. Both parents were legacy and now both their daughters, different ages, go there too. On another unrelated note... I heard they have a weird thing for taking twins too lol, even when one would be considered unqualified normally. I remember seeing a thread on here about it from a few years ago, and stats of twins were given that made it seem to be accurate. Never thought being a twin would be a hook but I guess it can be LOL

@srabinow2019 Test scores and grades will be lowest for phenomenal recruited athletes. Recruited athletes are bringing something to the table that is important -- to all schools.

Does anyone know how much being a first generation student helps your application? Additionally, do they consider extenuating circumstances. My ACT is a 30 (superscore) but my GPA is lower due to that I was in partial hospitalization part of my sophomore year. I'm in state.

Does GPA play a bigger role in admissions decisions than class rank? And can a high SAT or ACT score make up for a class rank not in the top 10%?
