To Go 2 UNC or Not

I was accepted to UNC early action as an out of state student. I live in florida, so basically by my options are UF and UNC. I dont think i will get a scholly to UNC but i guess I will find out in the coming weeks. My basic question is if i could get some opinions on where to go because i am really torn on where to go. I will have to pay back the student loans for UNC (I was under the impression my parents would a little while ago but they informed me otherwise) and i dont really want any debt, and I am going to get very little is any financial aid. At UF everything is free and i will probably make money going there, and the living situation would be better b/c i would have an apartement and new car. But I do want to go to UNC because i know I will grow more as a person, and meet so many more people than i would at UF, cuz at UF i will be stuck in the same circle of friends. Also UNC is the more highly accredited school and i just think it would be a cool place to be. I intend on going premed, and I also applied to Stanford, Duke, and UMIAMI. UM and Duke would be higher on the list but duke is way too much money, and i really like miami but cant justify going there b/c they only gave me 50% schooly and it would turn out being just a little bit less money, than if I were to go to UNC. I just need a little help with this b/c my parents are being no help in making this decision.

and btw i am a hardcore tar heels fan for bball and hurricanes fan for football, and i hate the gators. I wish I could justify going to a school based on sports, but I cant.

You will be finding out in just a few days if you are getting a merit scholarship to UNC or not. So you really need to wait until then before tearing yourself up on this. It is not easy for an out-of-stater to pay $27,000 for UNC. I know how the in-state folk say how that price is still a bargain compared to a lot of other schools, but you really cannot compare UNC to many many small schools where you may pay more, but also receive a lot of attention as an undergraduate.

Are you in the Honors program at UNC, where you would have the opportunity of being in smaller classes?

Also, if you are going pre-med, you have many years of college loans ahead of you after you finish your undergrad. studies, and then years of poorly paid residency, so think about whether you are better off going to UF for free. UF is a large enough Uni., that you can meet lots of other students, no?

    Good luck with your decision.

that is your decision alone, but i would advise you to go to the University of Florida. College is what you make it, and as any of my friends will tell you... UNC is no utopia. Although UNC is home to a lot of amazing oos and in-state students, it has its own quirks and not all of them are as easy to avoid as intl studies 77 (the worst class i have ever been in ). also, not to offend anyone (because I hold UNC in high regard), but as a highly qualified North Carolinian, I would only go to UNC on a full ride (Morehead or Robertson). There are simply too many students that I know that are going there that are neither interesting nor terribly intellectual. It's your choice, but I'd definitely give U of F a second look... Also, if you qualify for financial aid, duke will meet your needs pretty well. I've been accepted so far at Duke, Davidson, Amherst, and UNC and have had really good experiences with finaid.

WantsToBeAHeel: For what it's worth, I'd also advise you to take the full ride-- anyday. But as Chocoholic said, at least wait to hear about the UNC merit information. But... you can always go to UNC for med school!

I appreciate everyones comments, and it seems to be some consensus on UF. Hopefully i will get some money from UNC, and i guess ill find that out in a week or two. I understand what everyone is talking about with the debt, cuz my bro has 96,000 of loans to pay back, and i really dont want that to be in that type of situation. I will probably post again after i get the rest of my responses back.

My cousin lives in Flordia and got into Duke, Vanderbilt, and a few others. She ended up doing the UF honors program (full ride) and loves it. I think you could get just as many new experiences at UF than at UNC, but I dont know if that's true if you live in an apartment. I would live on campus your freshman year no matter where you go to school.

yeah i was thinking of living on campus just for the first semester, and than moving off cuz i would room with a real good friend of mine. Ive heard most peopel say stay on campus 1st year so if i go there i would probably do that. But i dont know if i could put up with a the dorms with a full year cuz some are terrible.
