Compscidad, it looks like they are throwing us crumbs, by accepting our students into the Honors program, but not giving any money. Anyone can register for an Honors seminar or H.class if they have a certain gpa, without being in the "program".

You can only register for an honors program class on a space available basis if not in the program. As COtarheel has mentioned , there are not a lot of offerings each semester and the better classes do fill fast as those in the program get priority early regisitration.

Robertson Finalist weekend was this past weekend and I do not think decisions are out yet...perhaps tomorrow for those involved, and the official announcement later in the week.

Have you spoke with the admissions dept (not Fin Aid) about merit awards and the importance they play in your decision? I know for a fact that this worked last year for someone we know.

I am confused. Has UNC sent out all scholarship and honors decisions? I am starting to get worried.

All decisions have been made. Honors decisions were sent out with acceptance letters. Scholarship money has already been designated. I called the office and found out on Tuesday....the were still in the process of mailing stuff out, but decisions are done, and they told me ours :( on the phone. Maybe others could still be receiving a lucky letter.

I was told by an admissions officer (via e-mail) that my son's finaid letter was mailed yesterday. I didn't ask what it said, but when we first did the FAFSA, we were not eligible for need-based aid at a level that would make an offer worthwhile--our EFC was something like $200 less than UNC-CH's COA. Things changed, but only in the last week, not soon enough to affect UNC's offer. That means there must be a merit offer in whatever they mailed yesterday. So I guess they are still getting to where they need to go.

If you weren't sent a letter for honors is there any hope for a scholarship?

chocoholic: Was ecstatic when I found out I got the Robertson, though after the finalists weekend, I had decided to go to UNC regardless of whether or not I got into the program.

However, unlike your D, I wasn't accepted into the Honors Program. Go figure.

    Hey y’all-
Here is some information and some opinions. I have been doing soooo much research due to the difficulty of my college decision.

There are only 200 incoming freshmen invited into the honors program each year, and not all 200 come to UNC. The program is open to new applicants each following semester (Freshman spring, Sophomore Fall/spring) based on an application process. On average they receive 150+ applications and accept less than 50 applicants. There is a decent list of courses to take, which can be found at www.honors.unc.edu . Also, as for the whole scholarship and honors program together- it is possible. I have been accepted into the program and have received notification that I will be receiving a scholarship... More on this later…

Now let my climb onto my “soap box”
I visited UNC last week during my spring break and stayed 3 days and 2 nights with an Honors student. The classes where AWESOME! I visited English 29 with Prof. Kendall and another classes with Prof. Golberg. This visit has truly swayed my decision. I was accepted at Duke, yet at UNC there are so many better opportunities and experiences…There is a more academically diverse atmosphere with a variety of differing points-of-view. I was introduced to some awesome people including the student body president and the daughter of the owner of FED-EX. Next year we will be surrounded with the same diverse student body with the incoming freshmen including Mayor Giuliani’s son. Also, to be accepted into UNC, you must be a well rounded student. The honors and scholarship students I met were not “nerdy,” and were really cool people. I went to listen to Coach Carter, the actually person on whom they based the recent movie, while the Monday after I left, John Edwards was scheduled to speak. Although these parts of UNC are not what are most important in making a college decision, they provide a very interesting experience.

Hence, even if you are not in the honors program or have not received scholarships, Carolina provides one of the best undergraduate college experiences in the nation.

by the way... a correction to someone's previous thread... I have not yet received the Carolina Scholars scholarship, however I did receive a letter and a phone call from the scholarship office informing me that I was selected by the committee to receive a merit scholarship. I live in Charlotte NC and we are supposed to receive notification either Saturday or Monday. (Today is Sunday so by process of elimination...) :)

There is soooo much to say… but I’m in a hurry and don’t want to over preach… and dont have time to organize my thoughts...hope this helps

Great post! Glad you liked your visit...I felt the exact same way when I visited last year, and Carolina has exceeded even my high expectations. Congrats on the scholarship...it's a very generous award and comes with some nice perks! Welcome to UNC and we all look forward to seeing you on campus next fall!
