I just wanted to know what my chances are.

SAT: 660M, 740R, 690W
ACT: 33
School: highly competitive private school
GPA: 3.6 unweighted, 4.2 weighted ( out of 4.5)
Rank: our school doesn't rank but around top 15% (out of 99 students)
State: Mississippi

extracurricular activities:
NHS
French Club - president
Cooking Club
Chess Club
Boy Scout - eagle scout and senior patrol leader
Piano for 10 years
Weekly volunteer service at nursing home (around 90 - 100 hours accumulated)
Varsity Football: 10 through 12 grade
Mu Alpha Theta member
Student council - secretary
Mock Trial - winner of most effective witness award

Other
By my senior year I will have taken 6 A.P. classes, 2 my junior year and 4 my senior year. I have taken 4 years of French.
My junior summer I was accepted to take part in a program called Star Talk. Through this national program I studied the Chinese language for a month. I earned a 4.0 (unweighted) in the program.
Through Boy Scouts I went to Philmont hiking camp where I hiked for about 2 weeks through mountainous terrain.
I attended the Notre Dame summer scholars the summer before my senior year (China's Transformation).
I was selected to take the A.B.C. (academic betterment competition) for A.P. United States History.
I'm Catholic and very active in my church (altar server, eucharistic minister, confirmation).

There are a bunch of other things (random community service and awards won) but that is the basic gist of my high school career.

I'm an incoming freshman and we have almost identical test scores, took the same amount of AP classes, and took part in very similar extracirriculars (including a balance of club leadership, academics, and varsity sports)..the only significant difference between us is that I was ranked in the top 0.5% BUT that was at a very large public high school, not at a competitive private school such as yours..essentially, you look good, but you've heard it before, you have to shine in your essay.

Bottom line, I got accepted early, so I would say your chances are fairly good, just work hard on that essay and make sure you make a wise decision for your SOLE recommendation (other than the counselor's of course)

I am a bit more cautious because of the class rank. The average rank for ND students is in the top 6% so top 15% is quite a bit different. Because of that, I think saying ND is a reach is more appropriate, but I hope that I am shown to be wrong. Good luck!

thanks for the opinions guys! I know that my rank is bad but that was just a really rough estimate. I've asked my counselor but she won't give me any hint as to where I stand.

seriously good ECs there. eagle scout holds a lot of weight and your participation in your church will probably look awesome too. I would say very good chance.

by the way, philmont is AWESOME. my dad and brother went there. just an aside :) good luck!

I agree that your application looks pretty good. Class rank, as has been noted, could be a concern. If your school is highly competitive that can offset it -- if people with your rank in the past have gotten into highly competitive schools that's something your guidance department can cover in the recommendation letter as a way to put your accomplishments in context.
And congratulations on Philmont -- our Troop just got back a couple of weeks ago. Their pictures were awe inspiring. By the way, Notre Dame usually highlights the number of Eagle Scouts (and GS Gold Award winners) in each entering class in their press releases and articles, which shows that they consider it a real accomplishment. In combination with good tests and academics that is a wonderful credential. Good luck and let's hope you are on your way to South Bend this time next year!

Positive things...your SAT is 1400 (1405 is the average...the writing isn't looked at too much)...your ACT is 33 (32.5 is average).

Potential problems...your class rank and your GPA.

Overall, I would say that you have a fairly good chance of getting in. If you do, I truly hope you say yes because there is nothing in the world like the University of Notre Dame. You may not realize it while you're there...but you will soon after.

    GO ND!!
