Penn App. - Q & A!

Seeing that everyone has questions regarding the Penn application, I though we'd have a thread to consolidate all of our questions and answers. Hopefully, we can all accommodate each other and answer what questions we have.

I'll start:)

I know, I know, I should be able to figure this out, considering I'm applying to Pen ED. Here goes:

1. On many of the forms, like form 3A, the teacher rec, it says to give your school, right under your address. Do they want the name of you high school, or it's address? (I know this is a minute detail, but it's been bugging me)

2. If you are also getting a supplemental recomendation, on top of the two other ones, should this recommendation be written on the same form as the other 2 recs?

Any answers are appreciated, and feel free to post your questions:)

    3. Essays are supposed to be title-less right?

4.There was some controversy over the heading of the essays, anyone wish to clarify who knows for sure?

26e: Recommendations can be done either online, or sent in by paper. For example, you can fill out form 1A online, and send in recommendations through the mail. Either way is acceptable.

celebrian25: As far as I know, your personal statement should be title-less. However, some friends of mine who are doing the Pg. 217 of the autobiography are formatting the essay to look like a real book, with the page at the bottom, and the title of their autobiography at the top.

I know that you definitely have your name at the top of the essay, but there's definitely been some confusion regarding putting the Social Security number down as well. I'm going to call the admissions office tomorrow and get a few of these questions cleared up. I'll post the info I get.

When filling out the forms on the paper applications, specifically the teacher recommendation forms, do all the blocks need to be filled in with uppercase letters? It specifies this on the Part IA form, but I'm not sure if this applies to the entire thing.

I just got off the phone with Undergrad Admissions. They said recs. can be sent online or through paper. They have no preference.

Bravery: I would fill them in with uppercase letters just to be safe. After all, it's just one application. Writing uppercase can't be that painful:)

no. the reason for uppercase is illegible writing.
It's not to see whether or not you're paying attention.

Since typed words are never illegible, lowercase may be used.

    Good luck.

Question: Is there a maximum number of classes a Penn student is allowed to take outside of his/her respective college? Any responses about the flexbility of between schools (taking class not transfering) would be greatly appreciated!!

Probably a stupid question but.. in the famous autobiography question.. p. 217 out of 300 etc.. does that necessarily mean that since its about 2/3 through the book.. it should be around that time chronologically in your life? Or can I simply share any memory / event in my life I feel is important?

dw no. Someone else can confirm this, but someone spoke to an adcom who said they don't really care when it is- it should just tell about you. I had been wondering the same thing for quite a while ;)

I think so, as long as its good. It wouldn't make much sense to have a page about an experience you had at age 6 2/3 of the way through your book, though. Maybe you could do it as a flashback? lol
Btw, i'm assuming we absolutely limit this to 1 physical page, right, cuz its supposed to be just page 217 (and not spill onto 18, 19)?

dw, a friend of mine spoke to undergrad admissions, and they explicitly said that the page really does not matter. You don't have to calculate what day of your life is on page 217. You can write about the past, or where you see yourself 30 years from now. The point of the pg. 217 essay is to give us as much free reign as possible. Basically, tell Penn something really unique about yourself.

26e, Yes, one the app, it says limit to one page. It really will be hard though.......there's so much I'd like to say

Helix, do you happen to know the exact format we're supposed to use for our essay? Should we put which essay topic we're writing about?

KRabble, There's been a lot of confusion over the heading of the essays and such, and I don't want to give you any incorrect info. If you can just hang on till tomorrow, I have a bunch of questions that I'm calling Undergrad Admissions for (for the second time, lol).

I'll have a definite answer for you tomorrow, regarding the social security number issue, and whether we put the essay topic.

for the supplemental rec (e.g. from your boss), do we need to fill out some kind of forms or can we just send it in with other of the letters without any kind of extra forms?
