Pitt Start

My daughter received an email about signing up for summer Pitt Start dates.

Any suggestions from current students or parents about Pitt Start?

Go to the earliest one you can! As you get to later sessions, some classes are full and you have less selection. To get the classes and times you prefer, go to an early PittStart!

    Just as a little suggestion...

If it's possible, try for a date if it's right after prom weekend. I went to my orientation the right after prom and it was a great idea! It was one of the earliest dates (which was good for class selection) and I got to miss a few days after prom (which was good...who wants to go right back to school after prom?). Another really cool thing about going then was that they gave me my Pitt ID during orientation, which made me really excited to get out of high school and off to college!

Does anybody know when the dates are?

My daughter found the dates on the website where she registered. There are lots of dates, mostly through the week.

She's signed up, made a reservation for a place to stay.

When my older kids went for similar orientations, there were also programs for students' parents. Are there parent programs at Pitt Start?

Yes, engineering had a parent program so I imagine that CAS will have one also. Here are a few things I remember:

The academic school had some presentations for both students and parents, as well as some for one or the other. There was a large packet of events to attend, in addition to the academic building tours. In engineering, small groups visited a lab in each department where someone was waiting to give a 10 minute presentation on what their department was about and to show some examples of work going on in their department.

On the fun side, there were sign-ups for bus tours of Pittsburgh (Molly's Trolley Tours), Pirate baseball games, scavener hunt in oakland, free (I think) admission to the Carnegie Museums and Phipps Conservatory, etc. They also gave us a list of restaurants in the area. There was an ice cream and beverage station with tables and chairs outside of the student union.

I think that a parent could definitely occupy themselves in Oakland. And if you get bored, the city is only a five minute bus ride away.

I stayed in either Tower A or B, can't remember which...but it wasn't a single, so it wasn't C. I think most people stay in a tower dorm during orientation.

I'm wondering where parents would stay. Do parents also stay in the dorms?

My mom stayed in the dorms in 2000 and was placed with another mother.

However, my mom says there are now options as to where you stay.

Her co-worker who has a daughter who completed orientation in 2004 stayed in a motel room with the mother of her daughter's friend.

You do have to pay to stay in a dorm room, but I don't know the price differences between the dorm room and local hotels.

hmmm... i made mine for june 26-27 because of AP scores... i read that if you take the tests and want credit, you should go to a PittStart after you receive your scores (i can't remember but i think mine came before that time last year)... was this a bad idea?... should I have made mine earlier to make sure i got the classes i wanted instead of trying to accomidate those AP scores? (i don't believe there are any earlier dates available now...)

You make your schedule at the Pittstart days, so if you want to exempt freshman level classes it would be better to wait for the scores. Otherwise, you would have to re-do your schedule anyway.
