applied to pitt as a transfer - freaking nervous!

hey guys. Im applied to transfer to U Pitt but i am freaking nervous right now!!!! was attending drexel for a while, but the school just didnt do it for me. U Pitt i like a lot better, plus i know a few kids there that i have been very close to in the past.

so how hard is it to get in as a transfer? i swere to god im losing sleep over this. here is some background info.

HIGH SCHOOL--
-No Class Rank Given
-GPA was around an 82%, we didnt do it on a 4.0 Scale
-SAT was slightly over 1100 (Old Format)
-Average courseload

NOW--
-Drexel University
-Over 60 Credits (mainly due to trimester), equivilant of 1.5 years
-GPA for 3 semesters was 3.41, 3.00, 2.12.
-Reason for the drop was my father became VERY ill and it turned out to be a full time drop. I had to commute to hopsital, commute home to take care of little brother, and to assist my mom when push came to shove. He passed away that semester as well.

BEFORE-
-community college
-Good grades, above a 3.0
-Attended community college while attending drexel 1 semester, and still pulled off a 3.41 GPA

-Submittied 2 esssays. One dealt with life change and how my views, goals / personality changed, second one described why my grades dipped.

so what do you think here?

i wonder if i should retake the SAT test to up it a little bit? its actually kind of low looking at it, but how do you think they will look at that in relation to my other semesters of college?

also, housing might be hard to get, so i dont know.

thanks

surftb15, it's gonna be tough. I'm sorry to hear about your father, and I'm sure admissions will forgive that semester. But the rest of your numbers are still on the low side. I think you should take the SAT again; do whatever it takes to improve your profile. Good luck.

so retake the SAT's? can you submit new scores easy? Im worried about the new format, isnt it harder?

also, im not worried about my GPA at drexel, it was pretty fine. just the last semester got fed up. They say they look for a 2.8 GPA, so im right there, even exceeding it for 2 semesters. might take classes ove rthe summer too.

I did submit an essay and it was really strong, so i think that will help. Might even help counteract my SAT SCORES.

The statistics they have are admit 50% of students, so its a coin flip at this time. If not ill retake the SAT in may. i dont think theyll hing much on the High school GPA, that is right around what they admit.

only thing is the SAT. GPA in college, essay's i submitted are all strong. just those sats :(

For freshmen, Pitt weights SATs pretty heavily, but since you've been out of high school for awhile they are probably more interested in your college grades. And when someone has a life-changing experience, essays are definately important.

The new format is longer, but from what I've hears it really isn't harder. Pitt will take your scores at any time. I'm not saying you have to take them, I'm just saying it can't hurt.

i know. U pitt is my top choice. Drexel i havent had a good experience, so i ended up withdrawing. It was mostly financial reasons, as they screwed me over when my dad got sick.

My Essay i worked incredibly hard on, sent it to a few friends and it was on point. SHould i post it?

Do you have any other alternative choices besides Pitt? Have you looked into other state uni's?

If you decide to take the SATs again, I definitely recommend studying for them. I'm not sure what your major is...but for the math they increased the level of math from the old SAT. It's now at an Algerbra II level. So if you haven't dealt with that stuff in a while you should definitely review it.

Maybe you could speak to an admissions counselor at Pitt and explain exactly what you did here. I don't think that after you have 60 college credits, any college will care what your SAT's were. It may also depend on what department or school you plan to enter.

Could you get some recommendation letters from anyone at Drexel? Also, would you consider going to a branch campus if you couldn't get into Oakland? I hear people like Johnstown pretty well, an maybe you could then easily transfer to Oakland. I think your gpa numbers of 3.4 and 3.0 are definitely good enough for a branch campus, and maybe even for Oakland. I know people who transferred to Oakland with good but not great stats.

i spoke to a lady at Pitt. She has the SAt's wont effect thier decision. It is for mostly college kids with two semesters or less under the belt. I told her i would retake the SAT if need be, she said it wasnt neccessaary. it wont effect their decision negatively.

she said that the best thing i could of done was paid attention nto the personal essay. Which i did. She said that that essay, in my case, would be the deal breaker.

in fact, she even told me to relax. So that seems alright.

i mentioned the drop off in my GPA, and she said that her committee would understand why that would happen.

So glad things look positive for you! With your two good essays, there's probably nothing else you need to do at the moment. I hope you get good news soon!

yea my essay was strong. This year was pretty hard for me, so i was able to relate it very well. I got help from an old mentor of mine, and it connects their university to my life.

the other thing is, im gonna take the SAt's anyway. i really wanna see how tough they are with the new format.

and i was talking to my mom.

worst come to worst i just pick up a community college AD degree over the summer, i only need 2 classes from that place, and then use their guranteed acceptance programs they have.

I know a poster here transferred into engineering with around a 3.0. I suspect a lot of it depends on the major you are applying to. Like if you want to study english, a chemistry grade may be less important, and vise verse.

Go to the main CC discussion page and search Pitt in the Transfer forum. You will find some discussion that may help you.

Re: the SAT retake. Since you don't actually need to take it, you might want to NOT have your scores sent until you know they are good. Frankly, I don't know why you would put yourself through that again if you have 60college credits.

so dont take the SAT's??????? What if i get a 2400 or something? Highyl doubt it though.

So enginnering transfer with GPA arund a 3.0? hmmm. i should be good, considering mine ranged went from a 3.4, 3.0, then a 2.12 when my father passed away. Im just glad it wasnt any lower.

my app is in review, so i should know something next week. If not, ill keep on reapplying until i get in. do that appeal process or wahtever it is.

Well, if you get accepted as a transfer, taking the SAT would just be like sticking pins in your eyes for no reason, imo! If Pitt said they don't look at it, but rather at your current gpa, why torture yourself?

The only reason I can see to do it again is if you are not accepted as a transfer and the low-ish SAT scores are given as the reason. I doubt that will happen though. You just have to hang tight for another week. ;)
