Visitng Pitt THIS weekend - things to see?

S wasn't fully enthused about where he was offered admission and applied to Pitt earlier this month. His offer of admission arrived today. So he has to make his decision in less than a week (to get the housing guarantee)! With prep for several AP exams underway, he really doesn't want to miss any school. So that leaves THIS SATURDAY as the only campus tour opportunity. I also understand finals are underway now, so Pitt is going to be emptying out, if it hasn't already.

He's thinking of majoring in econ, possibly a double-major with English or Math/Stats (I see there's an official double-major for that) and expects to have a fair amount of AP credit. He's going to try to speak with people in admissions and the econ department tomorrow and Friday by phone and email. Besides taking the tour, I'd like recommendations of things to see and do on campus that might help him decide, keeping in mind it's the weekend after finals. One of his best friends will be going to Pitt and the older brother of another friend is at CMU, so we can get general info on college life in Pittsburgh from them.

If you are in majoring econ, english, or belong to Pitt's Hillel (yes I know it's Shabbat and Pesach) and will be around this Saturday and might be available to meet for coffee (I'll buy), please PM me. Thanks!

We'll also be in Pittsburgh this weekend to pick up our freshman daughter for the summer! It's so hard to believe the year has flown by so fast. Yes, the campus is emptying out, even as we speak. Keep that in mind when you visit! I would recommend doing the Pitt tour and eating in Market Central if you can. My daughter has been happy with the food, the selection, and the hours the facility is open. If you take the elevator up in the Cathedral of Learning, you can get a wonderful view of the city from almost every floor. Also, we like to eat at Joe Mama's, an Italian restaurant just off campus, on Forbes. If you have time, riding the one of the inclines is fun! But they're a couple of miles away from campus, a short car ride. Enjoy your visit!

Yes, via the rolling admissions program. Decent grades, great SAT numbers (at least we think so) and excellent ECs and essays, if I say so myself. He's kicking himself for not applying earlier (like before the finaid deadline) but that's life. The difference in cost for the Virginia in-state school he's considering vs Pitt doesn't make the decision easier for him.

LNM - thanks for the tips. I've was up one of the inclines at a restaurant overlooking Pittsburgh when I was in town for a conference at CMU/SEI years ago - spectacular night view of the city (made up for the overpriced dinner & drinks).

    in all honesty,

this is the worst weekend to visit. people are clearing out and a lot of the campus will be closed.

if you want to see something, go to the pirates game and watch them get creamed by the phillies. the tickets are 9 bucks, and a lot of students are going to be there.

you should've come on an orientation day. if you are, then go on to the Discover Pittsburgh tour. I live in pburgh and went on it during my summer orientation day and it was AMAZING and covered practically everything =]
