USC SCA Class of 2023 Discussion

CelestialDreamsCelestialDreams 50 replies1 threadsRegistered User Junior Member
Hello all!

I'm a rising senior living in the UK and doing a French baccalaureat (confusing, I know). I'm going to apply to the Film and Television Production major. As of right now, I've just started my application and I was wondering if anyone had any admission tips or if any current students would like to share their experience at SCA. I just thought it would be a good place to discuss everything SCA for this year's applicants.

Good luck to everyone!

Good luck with your application. You may want to start by looking through last cycle's SCA thread...

Thank you both for replying! I've been very busy but, I thought I would ask a few questions to get started:
    1. What did you write about in the personal statement and how did you structure it?
    2. What previous experience did you have in film?
    3. What's your impression of SCA as a current student and of USC as a whole? What are the classes like?

I also thought I could update you on my application. I'm just finishing up my second draft of my common app essay and I'm just starting to bullet point ideas for supplemental questions.
Feel free to share your experience and where you are in the admissions process!

Hi! I will also be applying to SCA this year, most likely to Cinema & Media Studies (I'm somewhat debating Film/TV Production). @CelestialDreams I hope you don't mind me also posting questions on your thread, but I was wondering if anyone knew if the two project questions should be 1 page single spaced or double spaced? And also, what length should I aim for on the Cinema & Media Studies Personal Statement and Writing Sample?

USC's School of Cinematic Arts was ranked as the #1 film school for the 6th year in a row by The Hollywood Reporter. Here is a link below to the article which also features a video: "Hollywood Needs Us": A Year in the Trenches at America's Top Film School | USC

Good luck to all of this cycle's applicants...

Sorry, this isn’t an SCA specific question.

Is anyone taking dual credit in HS from OOS? Trying to find out if USC will accept DC courses that show up on high school transcript AND on a separate college transcript.

I know they won’t accept credit for DC courses on high school transcript only.

Got an answer from Admissions regarding incoming credits...basically it’s a maybe. Expected.

In the meantime, S19 is busy working on slideroom supplements for film prod & CAMS. I don’t think he’s passed the outline stage on the SCA personal statement. He’s a great writer, just a bit stuck.

Hey! I'm an international student applying to SCA this year as well for film and television production. Do you understand what projects we have to talk about for the new two project questions?

@ocean2000 I'm applying to Cinema Studies which has the same requirements and I was wondering the same thing! So far I've been taking "project" pretty literally and talking about a physics "project" assignment and a group video essay for another class. I would assume this is probably a pretty safe way to take it, so I would assume something like a science fair project, any sort of group project, class presentation, etc. would be pretty safe.

One friend I was talking with though also mentioned using it possibly within the context of a personal project, like painting a room in your house or building something. Another context I was considering but I don't know if it would work would be something in an extracurricular, i.e. would something like a school play or an orchestra concert count?

Obviously, I'm just another student and not an admissions rep, but my advice would be if you feel like there's a project that would fall into the "safe" category that you could write passionately about, try to stick with that. However, if you have a project that doesn't fall into that shows who you are, shows a good example of success or failure, and you feel really passionate about that topic, I think in most cases the project you choose wouldn't be a "wrong" one. In the past I've always heard that SCA kind of has vague prompts to try and promote creativity, so I think as long as you don't stray too far off the beaten path, thinking outside of the box is definitely not a bad thing.

I hope this helps clarify things a little! And if anyone else feels like I'm totally wrong please tell me as much!

And for anyone wanting to direct message within CC, it is really easy. Simply click on the user's username. It will open a new page with a message tab to then click on.
