UT-Dallas for Pre-med

ViggyRamViggyRam - Posts: 2,216 Senior Member
The UT-Dallas forum is dead. I'm looking for responses on this one as a result.

1. Would it be easy to get research opportunities at UT-Dallas?
2. Would I find it easy to find clinical experience (shadowing, observing surgery, volunteering in ER, etc.) around the UT-Dallas area?
3. Is UT-Dallas a respected school in Texas and does it have a good premed reputation?
4. Does UT-Dallas send a lot of premeds off to Baylor/UTSW/UTMB/UTH med schools/
5. If UT-Dallas has better SAT scores (25th and 75th percentiles) than TAMU and comparable to UT why does it seem to be completely overshadowed?
6. Would it be easy to transfer to UT from UT-Dallas after year one and what would be the cons of doing so?

    1. Yes with your stats/ intelligence
    2. Yes
    3. School doesn't matter for premed unless its HYPSM or similar. UTD will be viewed the same as UT, TAMU, LSU, OU, etc.
    5. It emphasizes math and science (not a bad thing) and rewards high scorers. Also many of the ppl at TAMU and UT Austin may have been auto-admits with low SAT scores.

    6. Yes with your intelligence (i've seen your stats) you could easily do it. And a con would be you would live in dallas at a university that I believe I've heard is not very social and has lots of commuters. Also, if you are an honors student or dean's scholar or whatever at UT austin, you get many great opportunities. At UTD I bet they would treat people like you very well also with scholarships, research opportunities, best teachers, advisors etc. because you are an exceptional student

But I'm not sure if they offer as generous scholarships to transfer students

Thanks, anyone else want to answer these q's? Anyone know anything about no.4?

And what are any other cons of transferring to UT from UT-Dallas? Do med schools care that you transferred/view grades differently from yr.2 onwards?

Can transfers to UT get scholarship money and, if so, how much usually? (Theoretically, if I go to UT-Dallas for a year then transfer to UT while having a stellar GPA, etc.)

Would a current UTD student please tell me how the workload is for them?
