Chances of UT Austin Computer Science?

LuckyLegendLuckyLegend 4 replies2 threadsRegistered User New Member
I am a current high school student who really wants to go to UT Austin for computer science. Note: I am applying or regular Computer science, not Honors.

My stats are:
GPA (unweighted): 3.5
Classes: Taken all math, literature, history and physics AP classes offered at school, and have passed every test.
ACT: 35 - 34 english, 35 math, 34 reading, 36 science
Class rank: my school does not rank outside top 10%, which I am not apart of

Extracurriculars:
Created a service, in the form of an app, that helps small attract nearby customers, allowing them to stay in business and be more successful. This app is used in 3 restaurants currently, and has attracted over 2k customers.

Had an internship opportunity this summer with a professor from a local university, where I helped code, and do projects and research for him. My name is on the projects, and have documentation to show what I did. The professor also wrote a rec. letter for me.

2nd degree Black belt in taekwondo that is internally recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation, and am also a black belt in both karate and Brazilian Jiujitsu. I now teach Taekwondo at my school.

President of my local toastmasters chapter, and have been an active member for 4 years

Officer of my school Youth and Government club (similar to debate) and have named a Distinguished Delegate, honor only given to approx. 25 people out of 300+.

Officer of my school Ted-Ed club.

Was top 5 out of 30+ teams in an entrepreneur ship competition, where we had to create a business idea and pitch it to real entrepreneurs.

Received 2 awards from my city for volunteering

Once again, I am really interested in UT com sci, and was wondering if i have a shot for com sci admission. BTW, I am in-state student.

Please be honest, even if you think it may hurt me.

I actually think you have a shot at it. As you know, because you are not an auto admit, your chances are significantly lower but your EC's and scores are great. Make sure you do a great essay. Don't count on UT because it is a reach but I think you have a chance. Do apply to other schools - A&M, UTD because you would be admitted without issue and possibly get merit scholarship $.

By applying you do have a chance... however comp sci is one of the most popular majors at UT (and at many universities across the country), so while you have a stellar test score, your chances remain.. about 1 in 10.

Class rank is used instead of GPA in Texas, so if your school is in Texas, you'll always know exactly what your rank is. If the school only ranks the top 10%, you're out of state. UT reserves 90% of applicants for in-state, which means that you have a 10% chance of admission. That's just for the university. For CS, it's a lot more competitive, so it's slim to none. Also, out of state tuition is triple the cost of in-state. For a degree as ridiculously employable as CS, it's not worth the cost.

UT admits around a thousand CS students each year out of ~4500 applications. So approx 20%. With a 35 and instate, you have a little better chance than that.
