Class Rank and UVA

I feel that I am qualified with GPA, SATs, instate, brother went to UVA, etc, to get into UVA for the 2006/2007 school year. My GPA is a 4.04 cumulative, which is right at last year's average for applicants. Unfortunately, the other kids in my class of 2006 have ridiculously high GPAs, and I am ranked 99th out of 470, which puts me in the 21st percentile of my class. Will this keep me out of UVA? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, 21% percentile will definitely hurt you significantly unless you go somewhere like TJ. Especially if many people from your school/district apply to UVA, since admissions office will fill certain quotas from each area.

Average GPA figures are always ridiculous. Weighting systems are different at every school; they serve to compare students within the school. Therefore, they hold little validity when comparing students from different schools and different school systems. Obviously, your weighted GPA of 4.04 puts you behind a fifth of your graduating class, which in the eyes of the UVA admissions office will not exactly be too impressive. Applicants should pay more attention to their class rank and less attention to their weighted GPAs relative to the GPA figures quoted by the admissions office. I have a feeling that your rank and unweighted grade point average will keep you out of UVA, unless your other factors are astounding or you suddenly get really, really good at basketball.

i believe my unweighted GPA is about a 3.44. i have no idea how that would rank among others in my class.

not to be too harsh but that GPa might hurt with gettin into UVA...but u got a chance

An unweighted GPA of 3.44 isn't what I'd call competitive. Also, I don't think that that number is ranked - that's what the weighted GPA is for (in order to reflect difficulty of schedule.)

Thanks for everyone's insight! Good luck if you're applying to UVA for next fall.
