Is majoring in Econ at UVA worth it?

KafkaisaloneKafkaisalone Registered User Posts: 39 Junior Member
I am planning to major in Econ and take math classses at UVA as a transfer student. After that I would like to go to a grad school for Econ.

Would it be worthwhile? I have done a lot of research on my own, but still am not sure if the major is worth my time and effort at UVA. Does the world regard highly of UVA Econ undergraduate?

The Atlantic seems to think so...

"But once again, for dollar-for-dollar investment, nothing beats going to the University of Virginia as an in-state student. PayScale found that a degree in business, or computer science, or engineering, or economics at UVA has a higher dollar-for-dollar return than any major at any other school in the country. Yes, better than majoring in finance at Harvard, or computer science at Stanford, or business at Berkeley, or anything at Harvey Mudd."

What other alternative you are considering?

    I may do government instead.

From the standpoint of the job market, I would guess that economics would be better than government. Career Services can probably provide you with specific info.

I thought you were asking whether it was worth it to transfer to UVa for economics, vs. to study at another university.

Hey charliesch, I'm transferring into the comm school at uva this fall! Send me a message and we can connect up! I think Econ can be very worthwhile. I heard of one uva kid (through his sister) that he was an Econ MINOR! and got a position at the blackstone group (huge paying highly prestigious Wall Street investment banking group). On my own hunch, I think an Econ & Math pairing would be a great mix

cnu: I'm an alum parent of a current UVa student. I don't live in the area.
