Question about one of UVA supplementals

For the question that asks: "What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?", do I have to reply with a response that is specific to the major or my personal interests?

To specify, I intend to major in Biology at the College of Arts and Science, but I'm also passionate about art and culture that I have found to be influential to me.

I suggest writing about whatever you're most passionate about. Essays and supplements are the one place on an application where you can truly show who you are and what you are passionate about. Admissions already know your indicated major interest but they don't know much about you - particularly evident if an interview is not part of the application process.

In all honesty, you could probably go either way, but from personal experience, I would just pick whatever piece of work has been the most surprising, unsettling, challenging, etc. True interest in something always shines through in writing and is less forceful. For reference, I'm pre-med in the College and I wrote about a poem that has nothing to do w/ the sciences.
