UW Transfer Winter 2019

Hello everyone! I don't think I've seen a thread for this yet, so I thought I'd start one!

My stats:
High School GPA: 3.85 (unweighted)
College GPA: 3.8
SAT: 1940 (old; super-score)
Applying as a general student (not sure if that's the term, but I'm not applying to a major right away because I don't have any of the requirements).

My biggest concern is that I'm applying from a four-year liberal arts college in California. Every time I've contacted UW admissions they say they give admission priority to WA CC kids. (I'm a WA resident, btw).

Also, I'm wondering, where else are ya'll applying? I need another school desperately as back up, but I'm not sure where else I should apply.

    Hey, I’m applying too. Stats:

    high school GPA: 3.6
    GPA at community college: 3.4
    SAT: 2190 (old, took once)
    Major: computer science

I’m applying from California, too. Plus I think my GPA is low but I do a lot of projects and activities on the side to compliment my compsci education.

I’m applying to the UC’s in California (I’m a California resident) and UMich.

@friesbeforeguys good luck to you! I wouldn’t worry too much about your GPA—you’ve got a great SAT score and your extracurriculars seem awesome!

@Chargers21 The best way to "chance" yourself is with the academic planning worksheet for your major
    https://admit.washington.edu/apply/transfer/resources/apw/

    Look at:
    (1) How many of the recommended classes did you complete?
    (2) How does your GPA match acceptance stats on the worksheet?

Hi! I also applied for this winter as well!
    Stats:
    HS GPA: 3.83
    Undergraduate GPA: 3.96
    Major: Health Sciences

I'm an incoming third year at large 4yr school in Oregon. It was the only school I applied to in HS not only because it was more realistic for me to stay in state, but also because I was very naive to the options that I had at the time. It wasn't until the end of senior year when I looked into other schools but by then it was obviously too late. UW was one of the only schools that stood out to me and ever since, I've been obsessing and regretting not applying. One day during my freshman year I had a huge urge to apply to transfer for my sophomore year but I was totally devastated at the fact that I had missed the deadline by a day when I tried starting my app. I've since then made peace with staying where I am as I've already established a great network here, but the urge hit me again this year in late August -- this time three days before the deadline for winter. I impulsively applied anyways and somehow managed to write my PS and obtain all my transcripts on time -- not without many scares and uncertainties of whether or not I could actually finish by the deadline.

As far as my grades go, I'm concerned about the HS transcript since I struggled in AP Calc senior year and got a C and a D, but other than that I was mostly a straight A student. Also, while writing my PS, I realized my reason for transferring isn't compelling or exenuating as it could be compared to others. My PS was stronger when I talked about myself and weaker when I talked about my reason to transfer, on top of already being a slightly rushed essay -- I spent many many many hours writing and revising it so I wouldn't say that I rushed through it, but I definitely could have had more time to write it if I had decided to apply earlier. But aside from those worries, I realize that I am at the bottom tier of priority given my out of state circumstances so I'm fully aware that my chances for getting in are slim to nothing. Fortunately there's nothing I can lose if I don't get admitted besides the $80 app fee -- I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Good luck to everyone else applying!

Hey! Does the UW enrollment confirmation think work for any of you? (There’s a thread of reddit about it if you’re unsure what I’m talking about).

I don't see any offers of admission.... It's making me worried. I also have to accept another school's offer today. I wish UW would let us know sooner!

@Chargers21 yeah but I heard you could hear ahead of time somehow, but I don’t think it actually works.

I looked on the portal and saw that I was rejected. I think I remember reading on past threads that people can ask why and they'll tell you the reason. Does anyone know if you can? Would I call the admissions or get in contact with my advisor?

You can always just drop by the admissions office. I’m sure they would be happy to assist you. By any chance can you share your stats? And what’s the uw portal?

Oh yeah sorry, it's the MyUW. My cc gpa was 3.7 and my major was Comparative History of Ideas. My college career path is kind of complicated though. I started off doing pre-nursing, then after I had 65 credits, I took a break from school for around a year due to depression. Eventually, I came back last year to finish school, but I changed my major to CHID because nursing was just not for me. I have an Associates of Arts now, which all my nursing credits transferred into, and I just took some philosophy and literature classes for the last 25 credits and received a 4.0 for all of those. CHID doesn't have any pre-reqs, only recommended classes such as social sciences, philosophy, literature, art, biology. I thought I was well prepared because I had biology, art, psychology, and sociology classes from my time in pre-nursing, which all count toward my degree, and then the philosophy and lit classes from most recently. I think they may just have not liked the fact that I wasn't sure of my career path from the beginning or that I took such a large break and didn't do anything productive. Also, I could have spent more time on my essay and should have seen an advisor there.

Good luck to you guys! I hope this helps.

@metanoia95 is that major open? Is it possible that the reason was because the major requirements weren't met? I'm getting so nervous because my stats are similar to yours and I went to NSCC

@phprospective Yes, it's an open major with no specified major requirements. I can think of so many possible reasons why I may have been rejected. Maybe my essay didn't show enough passion, or maybe, as I mentioned above, they didn't like the fact that I changed my major so late, or maybe I didn't explain my future career path well enough, or maybe my goals were too vague. It's driving me crazy, pretty much. I made an appointment with an advisor to figure out why I was rejected, but it's not until next week. Let me know if you want an update.
