hello all posters! My son just got accepted regular decision today. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed there will be a merit aid offer too (and need-based!!) But my question right now is this - he was scheduled for an interview and campus tour this coming Saturday. Did most accepted students have interviews? I'm thinking it might be a factor in merit aid, but my son's college advisor suggested I call the school and ask them whether or not he should still go to the interview. Any thoughts??

congrats on your son's merit award, pkdof13. A lot of good vibes from Ursinus.

Uncivilservant, congratulations on your son's acceptance. My daughter had an interview with a student interviewer last spring, but I have no idea if it played any role in the merit award. My thought is that he might as do the interview and express his great enthusiasm for the school!

Congrats Uncivilservant! My DD was accepted EA and received a large merit award. We have not visited the school yet and plan to do so sometime over the next couple months. Awards are probably issued based on stats. If you're seriously considering Ursinus, the interview can help make your S's decision easiser if the merit/FA package meets your objectives. Good luck!

S got his acceptance letter on Tuesday (in a distressingly slim envelope). Don't think he's heard about merit money yet, though may just be a failure to check his e-mails.

Uncivil, I would recommend going forward with the interview if you have not had a chance to visit and you are not coming from a great distance. Unless your S would want to visit classes, in which case you might want to change it to a weekday. At Ursinus, the interview also serves as the info session with as much opportunity to hear highlights and distinctives of Ursinus from the admissions person. I imagine you and your S would have a different set of questions and concerns now that they are wooing you. In our case, S chatted for 40 minutes or so with a lovely admissions staff person, then I joined them with my many questions. We saw campus while students still away on winter break, so am sure he will want to go back and see it a bit more lively with actual students present as he makes his decision.

Congrats to all on the wonderful acceptances & merit!

I'm an alum and a parent of a HS senior who wouldn't even visit. I will happily live vicariously through all of you!

Thanks to all for your suggestions re the interview and for your good wishes! I called Ursinus yesterday and they were very clear that they still wanted to interview my S, so, of course, we're going. Good to see the place, even on a Saturday. Hopefully he has absorbed enough about the school from the website to have a good interview... the other schools he interviewed at (Clark and Drew) he visited first, THEN interviewed. So, fingers crossed, guarded optimism!

Ursinus was DS's first college visit, and he hadn't signed up for an interview, but the ad reps suggested it while he was there, so he did it. We were there in August, so not students around, but he got enough of a feel for the campus. Right now it's high on the list, but waiting on more decisions (including Clark, where he toured and did info session but didn't interview).

Pkdof13, did your son happen to mention if there was any particular emphasis to the interview? I realize that's probably a silly question, if he's anything like my son who just says "it went fine" or "we talked about basketball." Did your son apply regular decision to Clark? I think regular decision applicants like my son don't hear until March, seems like a long time to wait.

Uncivil servant, eager to hear how things went on Saturday and your and son's impressions of Ursinus.

DS didn't say much about the interview. How did it go, uncivilservant?
  • uncivilservantuncivilservant Registered User Posts: 48 Junior Member
thanks for asking NEMom1 and pkdof13!! He says his interview went well... not being in the room I have no way of knowing but everything seemed fine when I was invited in for the Q&A session. It did seem like a friendly place .. I was impressed, the campus seemed empty (COLD out) but the buildings we visited were beehives of activity.. wrestling match, theater rehearsal, busy gym. Both of us liked the school, the finances may be the deciding factor for us... no word about merit aid yet - acceptance letter received less than a week ago so fingers crossed. My son plans to go back and sit in on classes if it looks like it will be financially do-able.

I should add, I'm really glad we made the visit - now it's a real place, not a brochure of a college with a somewhat strange name!

its almost 2 weeks since my son was accepted RD, no word about merit aid... what are other RD acceptances experiencing?
  • pkdof13pkdof13 Registered User Posts: 375 Member
DS received his acceptance on 12/20 and his merit award on 1/29, so it can take a while.
