The early decision letters were in a regular small envelope last year and there was no email notification.

ED acceptance was a regular envelope ( not a fat one)

All letters (acceptance or rejection) come in small envelopes, so don't have a heart attack until after you open it.

In the past, all ED letters have come in regular sized envelopes. Those accepted under early decision will receive the large priority mail envelope that is mailed for RD acceptance in late March. The year D was accepted ED, financial aid letters came separately so you could tell by the extra letter it was good news. However, I think some students said it was all in one envelope last year. It would be a bit thicker than the rejection letter though.

There is no email. Last year my daughter received her early decision acceptance on December 17.

Last year Brad posted several times when he felt that official information from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions would be helpful. I know he posted when letters were mailed in the spring and I'm almost positive that he posted in December when ED letters went out. If he does this again, he will let you know when you may call the OUA for decisions if the mail hasn't brought one (generally about 5 days after they are mailed). His screen name is vandyadmissions. If you want to see what kind of information he has posted in the past, you can search using that screen name. Also, you'll find that the admissions office will post similar information on their blog.
