VCU decision

in Virginia Commonwealth University
I turned in my application and everything right before the scholarship deadline so it's been 6 weeks and I still haven't heard anything... I know they must have gotten LOADS around that time due to the scholarships, but did anyone receive anything? If not, how long do you think we have to wait?

    My son's application was sent in on 11/24, and he just received his acceptance letter today. He is majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Now we wait on scholarship notification.

    Hi! I just called VCU today, because I applied 11/29 and my friends had been hearing a week or so. They said they received my app, and reviewed it, so I should see a letter soon. That's probably the same case with you :)

    My daughter submitted her application and portfolio to VCUArts by December 1 and she received her acceptance on January 26. VCUArts was among her top choices, so she's pretty excited.

    My daughter also submitted her application and portfolio to VCUArts by the 12/1 deadline, and received her acceptance today. She is really happy about this as well! We are out of state - Momonthe hill, are you in state or out of state? We are from Massachusetts.

    MazeArtCrew, congratulations to your daughter! Yes, we're also out-of-state--Maryland. VCUArts was my daughter's first college visit, and she immediately loved the school. I think one of the big attractions to her was that it had the feel of a stand-alone art school, but still had the social diversity, atmosphere and resources of a university.

    Momonthehill, I'm so glad that your daughter had a great experience! We visited a year ago, and it was a mixed bag. The first tour was fairly poor - the two guides were having an intimate conversation facing away from us while we walked, would only speak with us when we were stopped outside a building, which was not for too long, and we only went inside one building, where students ate. It was a little frustrating, walking around these beautiful buildings, and not being told much about them. They must have been having an off day. My daughter and I ate lunch, and she was ready to leave. I had driven a long way to see the art school, so I said no. She ended up being glad we went on our second scheduled tour of the art facilities. The art tour was AMAZING - our art school student guides were totally engaged, focused, smart, and happy to share their great knowledge. We saw the print studios, glass blowing, sculpture, kinetic imaging area, etc.... I was very excited about the whole experience, but she still felt a little put off after the first tour. She did more reading online, warmed up a bit, and decided to apply. She was so happy to get the acceptance.

    We will need to drive down again after we have a little more idea as to financial aid. Our son will be in his last year of college next year, and with my husband being a self employed commercial artist, things are always iffy.

    I'm glad for you that you are so relatively close. Best of luck in all of the decisions that you all will be making!

    MazeArtCrew, yes, VCU is a far enough away that D would feel like she's getting away from home, yet close enough to get there in a reasonable amount of time by car or train.
    By the way, during our first visit to VCU, we had a similar experience with the general campus tour and the art school tour. During the university-wide tour it was difficult to hear the tour guide, and we were also disappointed that we didn't get to look inside any of the residence halls. By contrast, the art tour was very well done: the tour consisted only of one or two other students, each with a parent, along D and me. As a result we had a lot more interaction with the tour guide, who was very friendly and personable, as well as having the tour focused on the areas of interest to D and the other two students.

    Can anyone tell me if VCU offers out of state any grant/scholarship money other than the few listed on the website? My D liked VCU a lot but the price for out of state tuition is as high as many private schools that offer a lot of grant aid. Just curious if anyone had information on this.

    Our son is a freshman at VCU, and we are out of state. I can tell you that VCU gave him the best financial aid package of all the schools he applied to. And that list included private schools that offered good money--but also cost more.

    Of course he had very good grades, test scores and extracurricular activities too.

    One other thing to consider. Don't be afraid to contact the scholarship coordinator if you feel something isn't adding up. VA high schools using a GPA weighting system that inflated grades more than our school district--so we had to recalculate his weighted GPA using their standards and show that to the coordinator.

    Thank you for the info. I couldn't find anything on their site so your post was super useful and gives me some hope. My D has the grades, scores and extracurriculars so we'll keep it on our list. After I found their NPC (which didn't ask for grades or scores and was basically a tuition calculator), I was ready to cross them off! .

    Hope your son is having a successful freshman year. It looks like a really great school.
