What to Avoid for Video Submissions to Film School?

What are some do's/dont's when it comes to submitting a film to film school? What are film schools looking in a film?
I am applying to USC, NYU, Emerson, and Syracuse. I've heard from lots that they are arguably some of the biggest names for film school.
The reason why I am asking is because my most recent film is in another language, and it features gay themes. It is autobiographical, and it connects very plainly to my common application about my identity.
My worry is that it'll either help me stand out, or isolate me and make me an easy cut. Should I be worried?
