Tyler Art vs VCU Arts

My daughter is deciding between VCU Art and Tyler-we live in Maryland. She prefers emphasis on illustration (she loves to draw) and maybe graphic design. VCU Art has a separate concentration for Illustration-related, and Tyler has graphic design only but I have heard they have many illustration courses. Any advice. We have received the same aid from both schools. thank you

our D is a junior GD major at VCUarts. Our experience has been just terrific. She loves Richmond , and has had tremendous success at VCUarts. . For us, couldn't be much better, but she Is very motivated and proactive. She turned down most of the other well known private design schools and she just clicked with Richmond. Its a great artsy community.

@popstaryo my D is a junior in the GAID program at Tyler. When she first looked at the school she was more focused on illustration and graphic design wasn’t her first choice. But she really liked the school and facilities and Philadelphia so she decided to attend.

The program is competitive and students have to apply to it sophomore year. The program is incredible, professors are all working professionals and they really prepare the students for a job in the creative fields.

She’s done a lot of illustration in her designs (there are also illustration classes that only GAID majors can take) but loves that she has learned so much more since the major is so broad. Her classes have taught her how to design apps and websites, brand restaurants, code for creative elements, and loads of other projects. And many of the seniors have found jobs either their senior year or upon graduation (always a plus in my book!)

Deciding is hard! She found visiting and talking to the upperclassmen really helped her decision.

    Good luck to her!

popstaryo- so VCUARTS starts off with every freshman taking the foundation year and then applying to their major.
they spend freshman year working through various disciplines and creating the portfolio they will use to apply to their major. It works great as it exposes them to many things they otherwise wouldn't . Many of the top design schools all have this foundation year process.
