Deciding between schools: Graphic Design -University of Tennessee, Penn State (Clemson if admitted)

Daughter has been accepted at University of Tennessee Knoxville and Penn State. She plans to major in Graphic Design. She has been accepted at Penn State's pre-graphic design program. Still waiting to hear at UTK for the first choice major though for now she's accepted into communications. She is also still waiting to hear on acceptance from Clemson where she would major in Graphic Communications. Their program is unique in their business school and not a Bachelor of Fine Arts so not really apples to apples with the other schools. But still a strong program for launching employment in the field. Could picture my daughter changing majors as well to something in communications or media. However in the pros and cons list I wondered if anyone had any insight to compare the graphic design majors between these schools? Though we are trying not to factor in the financial piece, UTK will be significantly cheaper with her merit scholarship there. She seems worried about Penn State's weather. Penn State has amazing reviews though and alumni network and proximity to DC, NY and Philadelphia. We had a great visit to UTK though as well and love the area and their program has just moved into College of Architecture and Design and once you are admitted past the portfolio review second year, each student has dedicated studio space. We still need to tour both departments which I know will help.

Go with least expensive option, unless money isn’t a factor. Graphic design jobs aren’t necessarily high paying enough to justify any kind of six figure student loan debt.

If money isn’t a concern, I’d defer to Penn State for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Amazing industry connections and close proximity to larger markets.

I agree. If Clemson or Penn State are roughly the same price AND affordable without parental debt, then go with whichever is cheaper as both are strong in that major both academically and for industry connections (with a nod to PSU due to easy access to major markets).
But if UTK is significantly cheaper and means no debt for the student, it's the best choice - internships will lead to jobs and no debt means being to accept the best job for your career.

Curious to see if your daughter made a decision. We have a DS at UTK and one on his way to Clemson.
