Does Wesleyan recruit for rowing and if not, does being a rower who has contacted the coach and is planning on rowing at and applying to Wesleyan ED impact the admissions process?

The short answer is, yes. Although, NESCAC recruiting is not at all like DI recruitiing; the coaches can't visit your school, for example. Contact is pretty minimal. How influential a coaches "tip" becomes depends on your grades and other things. Just fill out what sport you are interested in at the website:

i can't figure out how long ago that article is from but it says that males athletes have a 34 percentage point increase in chances of getting admitted than non athletes and women a 33 percentage point increase. it also says that (except for crew) 2 out of 3 of students on a coaches list are accepted while most of the nescac shools only accept 1 out of 3 students. so even though nescac recruiting is not at all like DI like the above post says, it appears that it would definitely be an advantage to be in contact with the coach.

i contacted the coach and he sent me an email back and told me to come visit, my grades are pretty good, 3.69 uw and about a 3.9 w (freshman year health issue to be explained by counselor, otherwise is would be like a 3.76uw and a 4.1 w) but i have a bunch of ecs including high level classical guitar competitions and lots of volunteering and my SATS are in the 2100 range, so i mean do u think crew could give me the edge i need???

you're in a funny position -- and you're not alone. The irony of athletic recruiting in NESCAC is that the higher you rank academically, the less you really need a coach's tip. In fact, in some NESCAC colleges coaches have been known to save all of their tips for less qualified applicants. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't go through all the motions because even if you aren't the beneficiary of an actual "tip" there is still the possibility of being on a coach's pick-list which wields a little less power but still lets the adcom know that the coach is interested in you.

Definitely plan to visit when school is in session so you can go out and row with the squad. Wesleyan has an excellent crew team. How long have you rowed for and what kind of recommendations can you get from your current coach? Are you a lightweight or heavyweight?

Im 160lbs 5'8", been rowing for about 3 seasons (sculled wen i was little but stopped for a while), the director of our program loves me because of my passion for the sport which stems from my family history (father rowed hw varsity at temple freshman year (being 180 5'6" he was a beast he rowed at vesper) and my grand father and great grandfather were in olympics trials are were once kings of the schukyll along with the kelley family so i feel its a legacy that i have to continue. My 2k is about a 6:55 last time i pulled but im sure its lower now prolly 6:50 may in the 6:40's and i hold like a 1:53 for a 6k. I would defitnally wanna row for wesleyan all four years of college so yea, im going to visit in july... The coach asked me to send my transcript, so is that any indicator of real interest?
