Wesleyan Sanctioned Facebook Group

edited December 2008 in Wesleyan University
So I got a postcard in my acceptance package inviting me to join WesAdmits 2013 | Facebook - a facebook group created by the Wesleyan Admissions Office to welcome the class of 2013. I joined, of course, and everything was fine and dandy, until I saw this:

"Anything posted to this page is governed by and must meet the Wesleyan Student Code of Non-Academic Conduct."

Did anyone else find that strange? I feel like it's a huge invasion of our privacy. There's another facebook group Wesleyan University Class of 2013 | Facebook but it's a lot less popular.

I don't know; I just feel like this should be addressed somewhere. Thoughts?

I find that strange, too. Wesleying has a post on how it supposedly violates the Facebook TOS. I dunno, I don't have too big a problem with it, since I don't plan to post anything negative on the wall. But then again, it would be nice to have a group that is not monitored by admissions so we can get the nitty-gritty details about Wes.

Something I find strange is that there is one guy named Justin Gaither who has created all the Facebook groups for Class of 2013.

I found it a little weird too -- Facebook is usually a students-only type of thing. But I think saying it's an "invasion of privacy" is a little overboard. You shouldn't be doing stuff that could get you kicked out anyway. If you have nothing to hide, it's not a problem. And if you do have something to hide, Wes is just doing its job by finding out.
They're still not looking through peoples' profiles or anything like most schools do! I thought that was pretty generous.

I don't think it's an invasion of privacy; it's not like you are required to join. The adcoms apparently talked to som students who thought it was a good idea. I think it's actually a little silly, though I guess you can get questions answered from more offical sources? Anyway, you can always join the other facebook groups instead/as well for someplace more "fun" oriented.

Yeah what the heck, Justin Gaither is in every single Facebook Class of 2013 groups... There are also a number of people who appear in numerous Class of groups (Cathy Li, Tommy Choi, the girl with the luggage, the person that's water skiing or w/e).

I was thinking maybe they've just overapplied or w/e, but half of them are college grads!

Hey, I'm a freshman at Wes.

As far as the Wes-sanctioned Facebook group goes, I find it pretty odd and disturbing myself. I havent been here too long but I'll try to answer any questions you have as best as I can.

And also, stop harping on the guy who made all of the Facebook groups. Hes just trying to reach out and make friends with people in the class before college starts; no harm intended. Some guy did something similar this year (friended entire '12 class) and hes a really cool guy.

Finally, congrats to all you who got into Wes! Personally, there is no other college I'd rather be. You will have a great time here.

im against wes making this group. it crosses a line into territory that admissions should know to stay away from. if you have any questions about anything, feel free to email me at yankeeman90 at gmail dot com or aefishman at wesleyan dot edu.

the dot thing is to prevent spammers/bots from picking up on your email address, btw.

I finished reading The Gatekeepers.
Why do I think Jordan character is the kid who is behind of all this?
He was class of 2004. Could be hired to manage whatever they are up to?
His initial is J.G.
Ok, I will shut up now. I just love your school, want be a cafeteria lady one day.

Well i'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but he is a UMiami '08 graduate.

It's not that i'm against people joining facebook groups to all of the colleges they've applied too, but theres at least ten different people who are in EVERY '13 group. And i'm talking schools of all shapes, sizes, and caliber. I just find it incredibly odd... and absurd.

I just got into Notre Dame Early Action today, and even though I'm definitely going to Wes, I checked out the facebook group for the class of 2013. Justin Gaither created that group too. Kinda strange. I wonder what his motives are

Actually, Jordan Goldman (from The Gatekeepers and Wesleyan's Class of 2004) launched *****.com earlier this year. Isn't that cool?

Appears it has been College P R O W L E R that has been up to all of this. It's a pretty smart idea if you think about it, but how did they think people were not going to notice? Anyways, I just checked and the official people have left their groups while Justin Gaither still appears to linger.
Yes, College ******* has been directly or indirectly involved with the creation of multiple Class of 2013 groups. The original purpose was to use these groups as a way to inform students that they can access a free guide about their new college on our site. No employee or anyone else associated with College ******* has used these groups to send out messages or wall posts.

Until about an hour ago, I was unaware that College ******* was working with another company that may have been using fake aliases to create to these groups. The groups that College ******* was responsible for creating were set up with real accounts. Here are the names that are associated with College *******, and they will all be removed immediately from the Class of 2013 groups(all other names are not controlled by College *******):
• Mark Tressler
• Ron Tressler
• Brenna Young
• Lisa Young
• Lauren Plavchek
• Jessica Lash

From a big picture perspective, having a marketing strategy using social networking sites (like Facebook) is something that is necessary to be effective in our business. We do pride ourselves on being forward thinking and aggressive. In this instance, in its current form, we have crossed the line and to reiterate, we will be removing our administrator privileges from all of these 2013 groups immediately.

Feel free to email, [email protected]**************.com, with any additional concerns or questions.
