You have a nice record and a good selection of colleges.

When we were looking at VT several years ago (for Fall 2003) they told us that they didn't discriminate against out of state students because they weren't getting that many applications from non-Virginians. Considering the record of their football team, I'm not sure if that's true anymore. Your SAT scores should get you in. My son had the same scores, but a higher GPA, and was offered the opportunity to apply for the honors college.

My son didn't care for VT although 1000s of folks in NoVA absolutely love it. We found it isolated and lacking in racial and religious diversity.

    Good luck.

I would be very happy with any of the universities on my list. I have thought long and hard about it, and I really like my final list.

I think you have a good list, just don't hold your breathe for UVA.

I don't think the SAT's are going to help you that much. My prediction:

    Virginia Tech/Waitlisted

Your class ranking will actually help. GPA is too low in my opinion although your course load is good. Anything can happen but with you being out of state....................it's going to be tough.

okay i can tell you honestly, but you won't like what I have to say. kids from VA aka my school can't get into tech or JMu with stats like that. Those kids are in state!!!! We average in state for those schools : JMU: 3.5/1190-1320, Tech 3.6-7 1300-50, UVA 1450+/4.0. you're out of state. there is no chance, no offense with grades like that. we DO have some schools however you DO have a chance at beautiful locations in VA:
longwood, beautiful campus about 2.9-3.2 GPA average, nice place
christopher newport newish campus, increasing prestige/reputation, EASY to get into, and if chosen for the deans application (which you might be bc ur out of state) theyll tell you in 72 hours. Good luck, but your Virginia list is way off for even an in stater.

Why do you have a B in calculus and precal?

all i have to say is make plans to attend psu, temple, or possibly rutgers
  • habdragon08habdragon08 - Posts: 569 Member
totallysweet- that is a load of bull

the average SAT for JMU is in the 1100s, and for VA TECH its in the low twelves. For UVA its in the low thirteens

And I have a B in precalc becuase i slacked off a little.

I have a B in calc because it is a hard class.

ok jmu and va tech was a fair argument... but uva on the other hand looks for gpas in the 3.8-4.0 range excellent EC's in addition to 1300 sats

UVA also looks at essays. I hope with my essays, i might have a 2-4% chance of getting in. I know i am a very long shot, but i think I do indeed have a shot.

In fact, I probably have a better chance of getting into harvard(I am a legacy), but I wouldnt go there if accepted. I really want to go to a Va School, so I thought if i have a 2% chance, its worth the fifty bucks.

You have a shot with your good SAT and ECs, however your GPA is the thing that is really bringing you down. You're right about UVA, except it never hurts to try and who knows right? If only your GPA was a little higher.

Have you looked at the University of Pittsburgh? You would have a great chance of accpetance and is a very popular school for students in the greater Philly area.

I visitied Pitt, and I prefer my safety(Temple) to it, so I really dont see a point in applying

That's fine, I just like to plug my alma matter when appropriate :)
