Uhhh extracurriculars
-founded my own organization called HOPE which sends supplies such as clothing, toiletries, bedding, etc. to Latin American countries. We began with an orphanage in Haiti and branched out to Costa Rica this year. It all began after the 2010 earthquake there. Have done many events at school and at the summer camp where I work as a counselor/administrative assistant. We've also started clubs in an elite private school in a different state (which send students to Harvard/ivies every year, so they'll be familiar with that). We started working with Feed My Starving Children, a famous organization which is now helping us get our supplies to Latin America. We are meeting with the president of it soon!
-very avid artist
-won several national contests (ex: ravsak - first place)
-some of my paintings are being exhibited right now at a nearby, well-known university
-thinking of doing some sort of artistic pursuit to raise money for the MS society
-yearbook editor in chief for 3 years for the whole school
-summer job working as an administrative assistant/counselor
-work with mentally disabled children, teaching them to get active and play sports. i got my friends to do this too (isn't this what they're looking for? like making the people around you better?)
-editor of key club 3 years
-vice president of National art honor society
-varsity tennis team, treasurer of Israel advocacy club, very active NHS member, national spanish honor society, etc other things

possible hooks:
-low income
-deceased father
-mother with MS

hmm thats as much as I can list right now but assuming i write a very strong essay too, what do you think my chances are for EA? Thanks everyone and good luck!

Go read the boards for those colleges right now, read the articles and the acceptance rates. Nobody can chance you for Harvard. Harvard has a 3.38% admission rate. Basically, No you won't get in. but, you might if you apply.

First thing to do is to go and find your safety school. A school you can definitely afford and will definitely get in. These tend to be stat based state schools. Where you can match up your stats to their guaranteed admissions and sometimes gauranteed financial aid. Then, choose the kind of school you like:

A good way to do this is to say, Hmmmm. I like Brown. So, what is it about Brown I like and what less selective schools have ......x, y, z?

As for the chancing for the ivies? The answer is you might as well apply, but it's the same as buying a lottery ticket. You also need to get a job. ;)

Yes- check the HPYSM boards. Chances are excellent you will not get in unless you have a big hook. Not that you aren't qualified- most 'qualified" applicants don't get in. Give it a try, though.

Also check the 'rejected from everywhere' threads. Pick a few good safeties.

Hey! So colleges are very holistic, as you probably know. Your profile is definitely good enough for any college in the country. It's just a matter of essays and recommendations, to be honest. Not to mention, Harvard is really impossible to chance for. The acceptance rate is beyond ridiculous, so we can't really give you insight on whether you'll get in. All we can say is you're up to par.

Also, since you're low income, you should consider applying to be a QuestBridge Finalist next year. It's a program for low-income students and includes many benefits, such as waived application fees to 35 amazing QuestBridge partners, an additional application where you can establish your background and express yourself through extra essays, and a very supportive community if you do end up being accepted to a QuestBridge partner. Not only that, but the Questbridge partners do look at QuestBridge finalists somewhat favorably during the admissions process. Even Harvard, who actually isn't a QB partner, apparently looks at QB finalists somewhat favorably. (I definitely saw it on Thursday when so, so many people actually got in.)

    Here's the link: QuestBridge Home

And if you have any other questions, just let me know! Feel free to PM me as well.
