Hi I’m Asian and in Illinois
I’m planning on doing ED to Vanderbilt or Duke to maximize my chance. How do you think my chances are?

Reaches: Vandy, Duke, WashU, GTech, JHU, Berkeley, Northwestern, Ann Arbor

Match UW Madison, , Case Western,
Safety: UI Champagne (almost everyone gets in from my school) , OSU, Purdue

Luckily, money is not at all an issue or is affecting my list

Interest Chem E
ACT 35 3.96/4.0 UW
MATH II 800 Chemistry 790
APs
Physics 1 4
Bio 5
Euro 5
APUSH 4
Spanish culture 5
Macro 5
English Lang 5
Chemistry 5
Calc BC 5

2 Bs junior year calc bc

ECs
Biology Olympiad competitor
Hosa state competitor
TEAMS national qualifier and competitor
Part time job
Science Bowl
NHS
Tutors science to peers
Hospital volunteering
Physics Club Copresident

I know ECs are average and will hurt. Mostly want to know if I should apply ED to duke or vandy for the greatest chance.

Both schools give a significant boost in the ED round. BUT, you should ED to the school you like the best and you think is the right fit for you, not which school will give you the best odds. These are reach schools for everyone.

Side note, depending on your intended major, OOS flagships are rarely safeties.

Ok I’m pretty set on applying ed 1 to Vanderbilt. Loved the place. With that in mind, do I have a decent shot?

You're in a great spot. You don't have to chase merit. JMHO but I'd try to get your list down to 7 or 8. Easier to keep track of than 12 or more applications. Plus would you really be excited about your 12th favorite choice?

ED to Vandy if you love it. Then pick 2 true safeties like UIUC. Not sure Purdue or OSU qualify because out of state admit rate might not be as much as you think for CS/Engineering. Maybe Michigan State? Then research and pick 4-5 more.
