So I came across this article, and it begins to talk about how Brown University loves to compare students using their SAT/ACT scores. Then it goes into what percent of applicants with different SAT scores are admitted:

“Indeed, look at how much Brown relies on the SAT/ACT. The information below represents the SAT/ACT scores for those applicants to Brown recently who had a 3.5 GPA or better. In other words, these are the most promising applicants in terms of their academic performance in college.
SAT/ACT Score Percent Admitted
168-180 100%
164-167 99%
160-163 71%
156-159 15%
148-155 12%
120-147 4%”

What do these numbers mean under the SAT/ACT score. They aren’t SAT scores because they are way too low, and they can’t be ACT because it’s above 36. Can someone please explain to me how to read this?

Wow, that site has all kinds of screwed up math.

We admit ~2000 students, but we only expect ~1500/year to matriculate.

Where the hell did they get their numbers?

What is a 180 on the SAT? Even more importantly, what’s a 180 on the ACT?!

What? “be admitted to a Brown or a Brown” This looks like an auto-filled CSS form based on a search query. As in, the article has a field <collegename> wherever Brown appears, and depending on your search (for some subset of elite-ish colleges, likely), it just fills in that name.</collegename>

This is clearly a for-profit website whose goal is to get you to sign up by making it sound like you’ll significantly boost your chances fo getting itno ANY college by registering for their site.

They make the claim that the average SAT/ACT score (using their crazy scale) is 152. Apparently, we accept 12% of applicants with a 152. Meaning anyone who is average (NOT in terms of our applicants, but in terms of national averages BEFORE our self-selection) has a greater percent chance of getting in than our acceptance rate.

Look at Harvard, Princeton, and Tufts’ pages. The SAT and admission numbers are exactly the same. I’d ignore the information on this website if I were you.

Lol, this thread. Its not news that Brown relies partially on SAT scores for admission (what school doesn’t?), but that site is just ridiculous.

Brown has one of the only top-college webpages that breaks down acceptances by SAT, ACT and class rank. A 36 ACT score gives you a 32% chance of acceptance – much better than the general admit rate, of course, but still a long way from a sure thing.

I was being stupid, not reading throughly and meant the PSAT, sorry, although, even then, it makes no sense, because it would be out of 160.

But why would LSAT scores matter at all for undergraduate admissions?

Regardless, you should generally ignore my above post due to the many lapses in logic that led to it. (I must have been channeling the website’s author)
