First I want to apologise for not posting this in the NY fourm, but I don’t want to limit myself since NYC is so close to many states.
So a little intro about myself. I am currently studying at HPU with 46 semester credits, and I want to transfer to a school near New York City. I’m a veteran so I will have GI bill to assist financial wise. I’m Asian, quiet, and trying to open up to communications.
So requirement for schools I’m looking for are acceptance rate over 20%, doesn’t go over 55k in Tuition, and is 200ish miles radius from New York City. (Or 2-3 hour drive)
Currently colleges that I’m interested in:
NYU (Maybe)
RPI
RIT
Stevens Institute of Technology
Rutgers
Stony Brook
WPI
Lehigh
I’m mostly looking for recommendations of others schools I can apply to. Comments on the list, questions, or random talk are also welcome!
I think that’s a terrific list. Great schools, seem like a good fit. We love WPI–beautiful campus, nice part of the city, very hands-on, project-oriented approach with lots of internships/coops/etc. You were in the military (Thank you!), so you probably have great experience working on teams, which would be a great fit for the project-oriented approach. You might also look at Clark University in Worcester. Very good school, but probably not as competitive in terms of admission. I believe it gives good aid as well. You might also check out Lafayette in Easton, PA and Union College in Schnectadny. You have Stony Brook on your list. How about Albany or Binghamton?
I saw your question about essays on your other thread. Just think of them as a way for the admissions rep to get to know you. They just want to read something that’s positive and makes them feel they get you. So just answer the question in your own voice and with your own perspective. Ask someone you trust to read it. Ask them, Does it sound like me? If yes, then it’s probably a good essay. Of course, you’ll also want them to proofread it for grammar mistakes, etc.
You do a good job with the post. You convey a lot in relatively few words. Take your sentence, “I’m Asian, quiet, and trying to open up to communications.” That tells me a lot. And here’s a lesson that I think is important. What if you sent that to admissions at a school that had lots and lots of A-types and was very party-oriented and socially competitive and aggressive. Well, what if they read that and decided that you and the school were not a good fit? Fine, that’s a great outcome for you. Because you were honest, you won’t be going to a school that’s not a good fit.
Just make sure to keep it all positive and forward-looking, even if addressing difficulties.
RIT and Drexel (maybe a few others) have coop programs. Their initial cost looks high but with the coop that offsets some of the cost. You may want to be sure to factor that in when you’re considering schools.
If you’re looking at Lehigh (which is a gorgeous campus btw) you may want to also consider LaFayette. They tend to go hand in hand with people. LeHigh has a more attractive campus to my mind, but others think the opposite.
Many schools that are outside of the 3-hours-from-NYC limit have buses that run regularly to the City. You may want to consider Cornell. Cornell CALS has several unique programs that may interest you. Cornell also runs daily buses to NYC. Cornell is also building a new campus in NYC called Cornell Tech – https://tech.cornell.edu/campus/
