NYTimes: Race Question on Apps Perplexes Multiracial Students

As you may know, the AA case from Univ of Michigan is going up in front of a Federal Court. If the Court finds AA to be unacceptable in either public schools, or in private schools that accept public money, will this change the admissions policy at MIT?

<p>What might be “going up in front of a Federal Court” is a “plan” by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette to request a rehearing of the case at 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, or a rather improbable attempt to convince the US Supreme Court to accept the case. If I were a betting man, I’d say this goose is cooked! On the other hand, this decision seems to pave the way for an appeal at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn California’s Proposition 209.</p>

Michigan’s ban on considering race and gender in college admissions was struck down Friday [July 1, 2011] by a federal appeals court, which ruled that the voter-approved law burdens minorities and is unconstitutional.</p>

<p>The 2-1 decision overturns Proposal 2, a law passed in 2006 that prohibits the state’s public universities from giving “preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.”</p>

<p>The measure, which passed with 58% of the vote, forced the University of Michigan and other state schools to change their policies on admissions. The three-judge panel of the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law violates the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.
