I saw Belmont’s production of Parade on Sunday. It’s one of my favorite musicals. Vocally, the MT kids were phenomenal. The acting,in my opinion, was a little hit or miss, depending on the character, but it’s a pretty intricate and emotionally deep story. My review aside, Belmont is a fantastic MT school. It is renowned for it’s vocal teaching staff. The graduates seem to do very well for themselves. Living in Nashville, my D (who now goes to Boco) has done shows with many Belmont MT students and grads. One of them is currently in Hamilton in Chicago. The other has done national tours and just performed in Kristin Chenoweth’s Broadway show. The college has ties to Studio Tenn, one of the few equity theaters in Nashville, and many students are cast in those shows. They just did Evita with Edin Espinoza.
It is a conservative Christian college in a fairly liberal town. As others have mentioned they have a gorgeous campus and a perfect location with so much nearby in Nashville.
Another plus for the school…I hear they are one of the “go-to” schools for SETC summer stock.
One additional observation based on the Parade Playbill and seeing the show…there are SO many pretty blond ingenues in the MT program there. It does not appear to be very diverse as far as MT students, especially girls. They had “guest artists” for the female African American roles in Parade. My D did not get accepted there, and I jokingly texted her that I figured out why she didn’t get in…because Belmont already had about 20 of her type!
I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, I’ll do my best to answer.
