I must point out that Antioch is not yet accredited.

And Deep Springs will be admitting women starting in 2013.

olin college of engineering in massachusetts, and macaulay honors college at CUNY, curtis institute… idk if you want a strictly music school, and also i had no idea deep springs was going to start admitting girls! awesome!!!

Antioch is offering the full scholarships to offset the risk students are taking that they won’t get accredited after three years. The first three classes will be taking a huge risk, in that they may be wasting 1-3 years at a school whose credits can’t be transferred anywhere. If Antioch does not get accreditation, those students will have to start over elsewhere. So in order to sweeten the deal, Antioch is offering the money. (They also can’t offer any federal aid without accreditation.)

Olin is no longer tuition-free. They’re hoping to go back to that eventually, but at present the best they can do is cover one-half of each student’s tuition…

If all these colleges are giving free tuition to all admitted students then this is really great, as the tuition fee is high so many parents and student they don’t able to afford private tuition. I must say that this is a great resource for the students.

Mark, this list is nice BUT, and it’s a big BUT… I think bobwallace should add the acceptance rate and some other criteria. For example, the service academies are free but with the exception of the Coast Guard Academy require an appointment from a congress person AND are highly selective.

Cooper Union, Olin, and Curtis are extremely highly competitive for admissions.

And as noted already by Bob, many of these are need based admissions.

So…hurdle number one would be to get accepted. The generous financial aid doesn’t do all APPLICANTs any good, only those who are accepted.

And Cooper Union offers free tuition only . . . housing is NOT included. So, unless a student lives close enough to commute, this will not be an affordable option for most students, even with the free tuition.

You might check the service academy websites, as of a few years ago each matriculating cadet/midshipman had to come up with about $2500 before showing up for i-day. The money was to cover some of the expenses with their plebe summer and plebe year…uniforms, computer, gear… If you did not have the funds upfront you would be offered a loan for the amount, to be paid back off over time.

Kat

ps in addition to requiring a Member of Congress (rep, senator, vp or president) nomination there are MANY other additional hoops to jump through. Interviews with MOCs, interviews with service liason, physical fitness tests, medical exams (height, weight, color blindness, asthma, meds for ADD/ADHD), eye exams, LORs, essays, SATs esp. high Math scores…process can take from 8-12 months.

Thanks for creating this list Bob. I like how you broke it down for each school as to whether need is a factor, work is required, etc.

All of these colleges stats as to acceptance rates and requirements are on their web sites and all the “regular” college sites as well.

Berea, for example, won’t accept students whose families make more than around $60K, depending on family size and other factors. They also favor kids from Appalachia. However, kids from anywhere in the US and even some international students CAN get in but it’s an Ivy-like acceptance rate. Room and board are paid for with work-study (which all students do) and/or any federal/state loans or grants a student is eligible for. At that family income level, obviously most of their students do qualify for need-based aid.

Regarding the academies:

This is not a problem. Students at the academies are actually paid while they are in school. The loan would come out of the paychecks during the first year.

Bob you do TREMENDOUS work with all of your threads. Thank you! I will be sending them to a few friends.

Not free, but can be nearly free are the Maritime schools. If a student joins the Corp of Cadets and ROTC at these schools, the stipends pretty much cover tuition and maybe more. The Corp does not have a service commitment, ROTC does, but so do the Academies you have listed.

Also, though not listing by name, some private/public schools are very generous to commuters. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my last son to apply to colleges whose test scores were barely average was offered a free tuition scholarship, as were a number of good students. Some of the CUNYs offer complete merit awards including generous summer study/travel, books/supplies (Lehman, for one) for students with numbers above certain threshholds that are not way up there.

Bob you are such a useful person! This thread and the other one has inspired me to retake the ACT before it’s too late:)

Just to let you guys know, Cooper Union now only pays for full tuition for undergraduate students and not graduates.

Believe College of the Ozarks in Branson, Missouri would qualify for this thread. Free tuition in exchange for numerous work hours each week in a variety of situations. Don’t know much about admissions but I believe there may be a need based component to that…will double check.
