MT Programs Accepting Transfers?

Hello everyone! I’ve got a list of 20 different musical theatre programs that I need to eventually narrow down to anywhere between 5-10 programs. There are a few different factors that have an influence on which of these I rule out, and one of them is whether or not they will accept transfer students. I have already got an Associate’s degree, and I am really hoping to only spend two years in a program, three tops. I already found some programs that do accept transfers, but I want to know whether the ones in the schools listed below will accept them, because I haven’t really found a straight answer on their websites or from my request for further information. So I would like to know if the programs in these schools accept transfer students:

Webster University
Elon University
Otterbein University
Millikin University
Hartford Conservatory
Northwestern University
Rider University
University of Evansville
Roosevelt University

Also, I’m not talking about accepting transfer students but still making them do four years, I’m talking about actually accepting at least some of my transfer credits so I possibly won’t have to do all four years. Any answers are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Elon accepts transfer students but not aware of what/if any credits will transfer. It might be helpful for you to go to the forums for each of these schools and search this or ask the question there.

Your best bet may be to email each program directly. It is unlikely that you will be able to complete a program in only two more years (although it could be a possibility, each program will be different), but you may be able to finish some programs in 3 years. It all depends on departmental policy, university policy, and which credit the school and the program will accept in transfer.

I know someone transferring in to Rider’s program this Fall, but am not sure what credits will transfer with her. She is transferring from another MT program. . Two other programs I know who have accepted transfers in the past are Penn State and Coastal Carolina. But I don’t know what credits will transfer for them either. And the people who transferred were again transferring from other MT programs. I would assume that you may be able to get out of your gen Ed’s with transfer credits, but may need to take most or all of the MT curriculum. But as others have said, I think to get definitive answers you will need to call and ask each program. I think it will depend on what classes you have already taken, what the new school will accept from your previous degree, and what they will require you to take to get your MT degree. That will vary from person to person and school to school, so I don’t think you will find concrete answers to your personal situation on the websites. But I’m sure if you call they will be happy to try and answer your questions. Good luck!

Shenandoah University accepts transfers and will work with you to keep the number of years there to a minimum. It really depends on what classes you have taken and if they are comparable to what is in their curriculum. I know Hartt takes transfers but insists you do a full four years with them.

I’m pretty sure that Roosevelt accepts some transfers as sophomores, though not very many.

Is this only if the student wants a BFA MT program? What if the student wants a BA MT ?

I think most schools are a bit more flexible with BA degrees. The requirements tend to not be as strict. But again, each school will determine on its own whether to award you credit for classes you’ve taken elsewhere. BFAs usually have more required classes than BA degrees . Students will have to go to school however long it takes to complete all required courses. The other thing that is difficult is that many BFA programs like their students to take their BFA classes all together as a group. So if you transfer in, they will determine which year you are in and would expect you to take your classes with the rest of your group. There are always exceptions. So again, you need to check with each school individually about your specific situation.

There have been kids at Pace who have transferred from other BFA MT programs. Not sure about transferring in with an AA. But you should call the director of recruitment for the school of performing arts, Wayne Petro, for the best in CORRECT info. As for Rider, there have been quite a few transfer students in recent years. There is an admissions representative just for Westminster College of the Arts, and I would direct questions to her. You can find her info on the Rider website.

This is all quite helpful info. Thanks for all your input guys!
