Hi, I was put on the waitlist this morning as well. I did some research since finding out that I was waitlisted and I called the school, so I thought it might be helpful to share some of the information I came across. So firstly, I found that this was one of the best websites ( http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/right-school/timeline/articles/2010/04/09/youve-been-put-on-the-wait-list-for-college-now-what ) in describing what to do if you are waitlisted at a school in which you strongly desire to go. This article kinda outlines various do’s and dont’s for when you have been waitlisted, I suggest reading it. Secondly, I called the University after doing a bit of research. You don’t have to do this, but I felt that it was very helpful because Minnesota is my top choice. When you call, ask to speak to a admissions rep because the people that answer the phones are just University students and can’t really give you the details on your application. Once being transferred to a rep, I spoke with a really nice man who outlined how exactly Minnesota waitlists their applicants. Basically, at Minnesota you are only waitlisted if they feel that if they had the space they would accept you. What this means is that if the school had all the space to hold as many students as they wanted, you would have been a firm yes, and not waitlisted. As my mom said, this is an accomplishment in itself and you should not be disappointed because the only waitlist people that they feel academically can succeed at there school and that they will accept if the space opens. Also, i discovered through my phone call that the school does not rank their waitlisted applicants; they do a pool, therefore anyone can get accepted from the waitlist list at anytime if a space opens. Finally, the rep told me that you do not need to confirm your spot on the waitlist, it is just there for you. I hope this helps, and while I am sure we all would have preferred a firm yes, being waitlisted is not a terrible thing, we still have a chance! I know you mentioned possibly calling the school for specifics on your son’s application, but from what I have gathered by looking at various websites, this isn’t really recommended because the school won’t tell you exactly why you weren’t directly admitted anyways. I hope this was helpful, have a nice rest of your day!
