Would anybody be able to chance me for EDI? I think my stats are pretty good but my ECs are kind of lackluster, so I’m really stressed out. My school is rural, small, and poor, so there weren’t really a ton of opportunities. Also, I wasn’t planning on doing the interview because they tend to stress me out, but do you think that will put me at a disadvantage?
Unweighted GPA: 4.0 (Valedictorian)
My school only offers one AP class, but I took as many honors classes as possible during my freshman and sophomore years, and I will have taken enough dual enrollment classes throughout my junior and senior years to get an AA in Liberal Arts from the local community college
SAT: 1550 (Reading/English 800 and Math 750)
National Merit Semifinalist & College Board Rural and Small Town Recognition
ECs:
-NHS Vice-President
-Book Club President and Cofounder
-German Self Study (ACTFL Advanced-Mid Reading Proficiency)
-Chinese Self Study and NSLI-Y Scholarship to study abroad in Taiwan last summer (Intermediate-High ACTFL Oral Proficiency)
-Independent French and Spanish Study (in conjunction with high school and college level classes)
-GT School (education software company) Intern $20/hr; promoted up to the expert team (more or less permanent)
-Volunteering at a non-profit thrift store in my neighborhood (Presidential Service Aware 2022 & 2023; 350+ hours)
-Mathletes Club President and Cofounder (some small local awards)
I want to double major in Chinese and Classics, with a concentration in Linguistics.
Sorry for the delayed response. Your stats are very impressive and your EC’s are hardly lackluster! I hesitate to chance anyone in the college application process because it truly is such a crap shoot, but I can say with confidence that whatever college you decide to attend will be lucky to have you. If that turns out to be Grinnell, I hope your experience there is similar to my daughter’s. She is a second year majoring in French and Math, and she absolutely loves it there.
Wishing you all the best. Please keep us posted!
Does anyone know when Grinnell ED notifications will be released? The last few years it was the first Friday of December, but that date has come and gone.
Grinnell released Early Decision today!
Thank you so much for writing such a nice reply! It’s always nice to hear that other students are enjoying their experience too. I was actually just accepted to Grinnell with great financial aid earlier today, so I’m super excited!
That is excellent!!! Congratulations!!!
S24 was accepted to Grinnell today! He’s thrilled.
Congratulations to your son! Please let me know if you have any questions. My D is a second year at Grinnell and she loves it there. Also, there is a Grinnell Parents Facebook private group that you should check out.
My D is applying to Grinnell ED2. We visited in the fall and she talked to the coach and met with some of the x country team. She is super excited but unclear if she needs to work in a why grinnell supplement as otherwise nothing in the common app that speaks to why Grinnell is her top choice.
Best of luck to your daughter! My D is currently a second year, so it’s been a while since she completed her application. I honestly do not remember if they required a “Why Grinnell” supplemental essay, but if it is required it should state so on the Admissions website. If you cannot find it and are still concerned, feel free to contact the Admissions Office. They are extremely approachable and helpful! Has you daughter done a one on one interview with Admissions yet? Even if it’s not required (again, can’t remember!), it can’t hurt.
My son son saw the option for the “Why Grinnell?” essay after submitting his application and checking the portal. The essay prompt and submission box are only on/in the portal. Hope that helps!
Any idea when ED2 comes out? 2/1?
Heard that last year the decisions came out in 2 to 3 weeks. Hoping they will be out next week but definitely before the end of January.
