I would first like to say I am new to this app but am desperate for some guidance and facts so I am sorry if I didn’t format this correctly. I am a sophomore in highschool applying to the NCSSM. I plan to major in environmental biotechnology with a minor in theater arts. I have a 4.25 GPA ( I know that’s not that good but its the highest you can get at my school because we only have honors courses) and am ranker #1 out of 14 students in my grade. The courses I have taken include the following: theater arts, movie studies, PE, environmental science honors, math 2 honors ( I did math 1 in 8th grade), english 1 honors, world history honors, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, visual arts (yearbook team which I am the copy editor of), English 2 honors, American history honors, chemistry honors, math 3 honors, NCSSM’s online course in global health in infectious diseases, and an independent study on plant communication through root networks (4 of these are classes I am enrolled in but won’t start till second semester). I know some of these might be categorized as extra curriculars but my school treats each of these like classes. I have scored 90th percentile or higher on all of my EOC’s and Maps scores. My extra curriculars include: SGA vice president, theater (for 4 years), and volunteering at the animal shelter. I am also competing in envirothon (I lead my schools first team last year) and North Carolina Youth Institute and over the summer I participated in the Resource Conservation Workshop. Right now I am currently in the process of creating a club that focuses on molecular biology. Because my school is so small there are not a lot of competitions, clubs, and in general opportunities for what I am interested in but I have been trying my best to take ever opportunity I do get and while I know it’s not enough to get in but any feedback would be amazing.
Im sorry not to know enough about NCSSM to be helpful.
But I’m more sorry that something has you thinking a 4.25 and top of your class isn’t good enough.
I think NCSSM would be honored to have you.
That’s honestly so sweet. I would love to go there but I am just have seen all of these amazing people who have so many AP’s and rewards and clubs that I would love to do and can’t. Also my school is really small. It only has about 100 people so it feels easier to be # 1 in my class and I just can’t help thinking about how I would do at a bigger school and how I would place. I know that is probably not important but it’s kinda been nagging at me. Anyway thank you so much it’s nice to have someone say that other than my mom.
You are a very high achiever and whether or not you get into NCSSM will not define you. You know how NCSSM admissions work and how geographical diversity within NC plays a huge role. Do your best but know that there are many paths to your dreams and aspirations.
Thank you so much! I am definitely preparing back up choices because I know with the high completion pool I could very well not get in but who knows!
