everywhere i look there's an article or post about the just released admission statistics and how for almost every school the numbers are up about 10% or more.. I really dont get it! where are all these new applicants coming from? this isnt a baby boomer generation! are people just filling out more apps? why the dramatics increase in only one year?

more importantly, will target class sizes go up by about same % ?? I sure hope so cause otherwise all this years applicants really got srcrewed...

Er, every school up 10%? Quite a few I've seen have only gone up a marginal amount...

And no, as a general rule colleges don't expand class size depending on applicant pool. If this were the case than most of the top 25 private schools would be as big as state schools...

Note that in addition to the baby boomlet causing an up-tick in total number of students, many applicants are now applying to far more schools than applicants even just a few years ago, so the number of applications received by each school is much higher. I suspect this is a large part of what schools are reporting.

The increase in number of students overall is expected to continue for 3 or 4 more years, and then level off.

There are at least three reasons for increases: (a) this is actually a mini baby boom time -- because of birth rates in the mid 80's to about 1991, it was long ago predicted that there would be a significant and growing increase in college applicants, probably peaking about 2007; (b) with the spread and ease of internet applications and more students being aware that applying to multiple colleges is a good idea, you have a greater percentage of applicants filing multiple applications; (c) the percentage of high school students that apply to college keeps going up a little each year.
