Can I defer enrollment for one year or transfer after next year?

edited April 2010 in Emory University
I've gotten into Oxford Emory but I don't think I can accumulate enough money for the 1st year. So, can I defer my enrollment and go to a state school and then come to Oxford for sophomore year? Or would I have to fill out an application for transfer...?

What's the deal?
Please and thank you! =]

I think I read on the university's defer policy that students are only limited to taking two for-credit classes while taking a gap year, or something of the sort. Doubt that deferring enrollment and spending freshman year at another school is possible, but you would likely have to transfer.

Just so you know transfer acceptance rates are pretty high at emory. So that should be part of your decision.

You can't defer a year and then take classes at another school. You'd have to re-apply as a transfer applicant. Some colleges might allow you to take a couple classes at another university. I suggest you call emory and talk to them about this. Tell them money is the concern, not that you want to go to any other school. Ask about deferring a year to be part time at a state uni and emphasize that YOU ARE NOT ENTERING A DEGREE PROGRAM at another university.

If they let you defer a year and enroll in another university, then they'd have kids deferring at princeton to go to harvard just incase they want to switch, and it would take up spots in the next year's class and make the admissions process even more chaotic (what would be the yield for admitted/deferred students?)
