Duplicate USPS tracking numbers! Beware!

Argh. Mailed a flat rate box to D in Illinois on Tuesday. Got a receipt with scheduled delivery date (12/6), correct city, state and zip. Tracking number on receipt.

Checked tracking number online today…and found my package was sent two days earlier than I sent…and was being delivered today in Arkansas!

Voicemail hell for an hour…finally got live (thank you gethuman dot com) one who has case number and they are working on it. Called local PO to also alert them. Postmaster told me that there are a bunch of duplicate numbers in system that have been popping up in the last few weeks. So when you go to track your package–be warned. Keeping fingers crossed that carriers actually look at address and get it to the correct spot.

fyi…

GAHHH, I just mailed 3 packages out for stuff I sold for Mom on eBay. Hope the buyers don’t think I am scamming them and they get their stuff.

check your tracking numbers now…you might be able to see if it’s already in the system and sorted–you have a duplicate…

That may explain why a neighbor of mine complained today that he received a package addressed to someone in another state. Mail delivery in our town has become such a nightmare of late that residents have taken to the township Facebook page to share war stories.

Good news here. Mailed a priority package to DS on Wednesday and he got it TODAY…2000 miles away! Woohoo!

That happened to me with my laptop last year. Took a day off of work and everything because I was living in an apartment complex. Someone signed for it- in Arizona! (luckily, it wasn’t mine, they sent me the wrong tracking number)

My mom changed her address in August. She recently had a Christmas present sent to their new address. Somewhere along the way, UPS (not USPS) decided to do an address change and send it to their old address (my house). The heck?!

Hope everything works out. Terrible time to lose/missend packages!

So glad you guys started this thread. I just got a new client that wants to deal with me personally rather than my agency. Good for me, because I get to keep all the money, but I’m having to get supplies, do billing, and take care of shipping. To cut costs, I was going to send out my final product using USPS flat rate priority. Not now! I’ll either pay a courier, local delivery, or use FedEx ground. Anyone having any problems with FedEx right now? I definitely want tracking if I can’t get hand delivery. Since client is wanting to cut costs by not paying my agency, I’ll just eat the overage in delivery because of the timing, but don’t want to do that on a regular basis.

update: USPS Customer Service gave me case #, etc., and promised to expedite investigation. They have traced my package to Chicago–the intended destination!!!
It has yet to be delivered to my D, but I’m breathing a little easier that it’s at least in the correct zip code. Apparently most larger PO’s take a picture of every package label that comes thru and were able to see mine.
I must say, that once I got a human on the phone, USPS has been very helpful, thorough and apologetic. I hope this was a short term headache for them…'cause I love those flat rate boxes…

re: FedEx…right now there are a lot of Budget rental trucks with a FedEx label slapped on the door doing deliveries. Lots of deliveries contracted out right now. I was irked to watch one stop at my neighbor’s house, literally toss the package on the porch from 10 feet and then burned rubber out of our cul de sac…

I ordered some flat rate boxes and padded envelopes from USPS, so I can mail packages but haven’t seen them AT ALL yet. It is fortunately some time before the holidays, but sheesh, I was hoping to get them soon so I can use them. They don’t stock the padded flat rate envelopes in the post offices but it does seem a nice way to get small parcels to loved ones and I decided I’d give it a try–if I ever receive the packet of 5 envelopes I ordered from USPS.

Delivery for us is very uneven. We get some parcels right away but there are prolonged delays in receiving others. Don’t know where the slowdown is, whether the merchant or the service making delivery (UPS, USPS, FedEx). I usually mostly ignore tracking numbers unless something doesn’t arrive.

Costco.com has been having pretty prompt deliveries but BestBuy has been very laggy.

I will send out a warning about one shipping company… Amazon partners in some places with a company called Prestige Shipping. EVERY SINGLE PACKAGE I’ve ever had “delivered” by them has been lost- in three different parts of the state. They claim to deliver and never do. There’s a very large thread about it on Amazon’s page, too. It’s gotten to the point that if I see them listed as a carrier, I will either cancel my order (if there’s time) or I’ll call Amazon and tell them to ship it through another carrier.

Problem with USPS here too.

Sent a large box priority mail. Too big to lose or misplace  Glad I insured it. Shipped Tuesday and was supposed to arrive (same state) on Thursday. Package has yet to arrive (Saturday now) and the tracking has not been updated since it left a nearby town on Wednesday.

Called 800# and hung up after being put on hold for over 30 minutes. Hopefully the package will be delivered soon. Also glad I shipped this early (for Xmas) and so happy I don’t have to ship anything else. Chanukah packages arrived fine. Post offices are getting crowded, but nothing like it will be this coming week or the next two. If they are this bad already, can’t imagine what is in store.

Next time, I’m shipping UPS.

crazed, did you try 800-344-7779? Start pressing 0 and then say Customer Service.

also, some of my LL Bean packages shipped by UPS (not USPS) that I am tracking indicates “adverse weather conditions” at the locations they are going thru and now are
supposed to arrive about 3 days later than expected…

Thanks. I tried the 800# on the website. Finally got off the voicemail messages and put on hold for customer service. The website did not indicate inclement weather. If there was a delay (going from downstate NY to upstate NY) the package should have arrived by now. Very disappointed and frustrated.

We had a misdelivered Prestige package also. A refund was credited immediately, then 2 days later the package was delivered to us by the person several streets over who found it on his doorstep.

I have had good results with the Flat Rate boxes - 2 days PA to CA. I did have a UPS package go astray (the tracking online said ‘train derailment’). I am sure this time of year there can be issues with any carrier.

The Budget trucks deliver FedEx year round in my neighborhood.
