How long is it best to stay?

I'm thinking about doing SYA in Italy for my junior year, but I'm not sure the length of time it would be best to stay there (for a semester or the whole school year). I currently don't have any experience in Italian- I could take lessons for a few months if I'm accepted into the program, but I'm worried it'd be too hard to adjust and I'd get homesick or something. On the other hand, I don't want to fall in love with it there and not want to leave. I'd appreciate hearing about anyone's experience abroad, especially in Italy.
