10 colleges too many?

bit of advice that i read somewhere: if your safety school is truly a safety, you don’t need more than 1…i applied to 2 safeties, just in case i didn’t like the first one or had $ problems…

GC doesn’t really have time for colleges, so i never knew which colleges on my list were matches/reaches…applied to 13 others

hmm … I’d bet that is true … but that doesn’t mean there is a cause and effect relationship.

10 apps sounds like plenty for the vast majority of kids (using the 3/3/3 strategy … however, if you are applying to the most selective schools (HYPSM etc) then going past 10 does not seem unreasonable to me … because all the reaches are such low odds that having additional reaches increases your odds of getting into at least one of your reaches. (And if someone applies to 14 … 3/3/8 … including the HYPSM/AWS type schools they probably will get into a lower percentage of schools … not because they applied to a lot of schools … but because they applied to a lot of schools that are low odd admissions for every applicant)

If Yale takes about 10%, and the same is true for many schools on the level of Yale, and for argument’s sake you have an equal chance at admission, then if you apply to 10 schools, odds are you will get into one.

I don’t know that that’s necessarily true, but I do think it’s a good idea to “cast a wide net” and apply to several colleges if you’re able to and if they’re all very selective.

It is most definately not true, what happens with these schools is that a smaller percentage get into most of them, and then a larger percentage is divided among the rest. But at least this gives a rough idea.

Videogamerx, I like that logic.

Ciaobella, yup, I’m looking to apply to Yale Early. Other schools I’m looking at are HPS, Cornell, Wash U, JHU and a couple of others. What about you?

9 is fine, but don’t do what I did and go crazy on safeties… I applied to too many schools under the premise of “getting scholarship money”, many were schools I can’t see myself at. That said, only apply to one or two safeties you really enjoy… and then reach for the stars for the rest of them. Best of luck!
