Ah yes, a DVR… We actually watch TV now - all taped (or at least paused) so we can fast forward commercials and things (like certain news stories) we don’t care about or back up to catch things we missed. We don’t watch TV live - ever. Well, I’ll make an exception for the big horse races, but we tape the intro and carefully time it so the actual race is live - just not the rest.
Other than the people, the things I would grab from my house if there were a fire are:
Family photo albums (the old fashioned kind), and more modern photo books that I have made over the years – of my kids growing up, their weddings, trips we have taken, and now the grandchildren, as well as one recently made for a relative turning 80. Most of these have entertaining captions accompanying the photos, and occasionally text of speeches made on the occasions. These photo books have given much pleasure to me and the people in them, and even friends who have appreciated them. I also did an “ABC” book for my toddler grandson featuring his favorite people and things.)
My kids’ “memorabilia containers.” I saved every note from a teacher, funny notes from my kids to each other (usually complaining about something or recommending that they work better together to be more effective against parental control), notes on funny quotes made when young, amusing journal entries from early elementary school, anecdotes about their experiences, etc. We pull those containers out sometimes when they visit and always get laughs. PRICELESS
I have a bedside drawer I keep for “special notes” that I have been sent that meant a lot to me. When a very dear friend of mine passed away at too young an age, I could pull out the lovely notes she had written to me and reminisce, and shared quotes from some of them at her memorial service.
Quality sleep: great mattress, high count thread sheets and foam pillows
Organic coffee made in a French press
Essential oils: I have a diffuser on my nightstand and love to put different oils to help me sleep. I love aromatherapy
Our Ring porch light: love the ability to scare people away from my house using my phone even when I’m not there
My iPhone: love it so much. I’ve separated from it a couple of times only to go back. I just upgraded to the XS max
Acure line of facial products. My HS friends comment on my FB pics that I haven’t aged! Good products help along with good genetics I guess (no crows feet, forehead lines, nada…in my 50s)
Venus razors, Dove body wash, Quilted Northern TP. Brands really do matter
My Clarks boots. It’s hardly ever cold enough to wear them where I live but I wore them for my NYC and Europe trip and they were wonderful
Lululemon yoga wear.
Wunder powder foundation. The best I’ve tried even better than Bare Minerals
@maya54 I prefer CDs in the car because I can’t see a digital device when I’m driving. Also, I spend enough time moving files around, I don’t want to do it with my music.
A couple of other things I love:
My Ikea memory foam mattress
Choirbar
not a “thing,” but our travels. We don’t buy lots of stuff, and our house is old and homely, but we use DH’s FF miles and hotel points to go on great adventures for not a lot of money. Some of the happiest times of my life have been seeing new places.
In addition to DH and my daughters and family and friends, things I love include:
All the childhood art projects and funny cards they made and letters they wrote
Photo albums of my daughter’s childhood
My house and my deck that I enjoy sitting on to relax and read
Reading great literature and so that includes my library card and my Kindle and my huge collection of books in h/c and paper
Seeing great theater
Travelling and planning trips
Attending classical music performances especially going to Tanglewood and more and more including performances in travel
My favorite places in the world including the Berkshires, the condominiums rented for many years in Waterville Valley,NH when my girls were children and we spent a week or two or three most years
Not to materialistic but I love my Movado watch that was a gift from my mother and my short strand of pearls that belonged to my mother-in-law - I wear those more than long strand that was wedding gift from DH
