101 reasons to attend WashU

I have a question for the people attending Wash U.
How is the location? I mean, Missouri seems kind of bland compared to California or Massachusetts, where many of my friends are going to. I LOVED WashU when I visited, but there didn’t seem like there was much to do outside of the campus. Are there any drawbacks being in Missouri?
Also, is the name recognition issue frustrating?
I know these are just very minor issues, but I’m just curious.

@rlabaznkitkat I haven’t been accepted to WashU yet, but I live near St. Louis, and there’s plenty to do. Museums, zoo, sports, there’s a vibrant city life. Japanese festivals, cultural heritage festivals, plenty to do in STL.

I can walk to WashU from my house in less than 5 minutes (my dad is a prof there), and I will tell you that there is loads to do in St. Louis. There is a great music venue, the Pageant, that hosts awesome concerts. Great food is walking distance (and WashU’s campus food is fantastic too). Also, WashU (from what my dad says) is a very nuclear campus in that kids really want to stay on campus alot; there are alot of campus parties, events, etc. there to keep students busy. But if you want to go out, the Loop (10 minute walk) is fun and hip at night.

Don’t let the “Missouri” title scare you…St. Louis doesn’t feel like that at all!

Hahahaha is #89 serious? There isn’t a beach nearby…

I’m a prospective student but I can add another.

104: No supplemental essay.

If it helps, I’m from Massachusetts and I chose to go to WashU next year. I’ll miss boston, but when I toured WashU, i loved how involved and passionate everyone one campus was! I’m not worried at all about leaving the city.

But yes! I do hate explaining it to people on the East Coast, no one has any idea what I’m talking about when I say “washington university in st. louis.” Oh well!

Great school and very challenging, competitive environment

Coolest chancellor!

Can anyone help me make a decision?
I got accepted by University of Michigan and Wash U st.louis, and I have to respond to these two universities soon.
I am an electrical engineering major, and an international student. I know that Umich has a much better engineering program, and probably better reputation, but I also like the small size of Wash U. It’s hard to decide. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

Hhmmm…that’s a tough one. Both great schools. If your primary concern is the size of Michigan, I can say (as a parent of a daughter at Michigan) that almost all students figure out how to make the school “smaller” for them. For some, it is by joining a Residential College; for others it is by joining the Greek system; for others, it is a professional club. There is something for everyone at Michigan and if you make some effort, you can find your smaller home.

WashU is obviously smaller so easier to navigate.

I don’t know enough about the engineering programs at the schools to comment on your choice from an academic perspective.

Good luck.

Michigan has a great engineering program. Every school has pros and cons. Washu vs. Michigan? if you are a Michigan resident, money is another factor because Michigan is a public school. Otherwise, size may be a big factor. If a college is huge like Michigan, the students quality is not homogeneous, which means that there are many average or just above average students while there are many excellent quality students. The class size is also huge. These days graduate degree is becoming an essential course no matter what you will be doing. So it is important to build up a good fundamentals in undergraduate to prepare for a professional degree or advanced degree, and Washu would be a better choice if you can afford and if you see the importance of the education quality in an environment with a close relationship with faculties and same quality peer students.

Our daughter had an over-the-top experience at Wash U. Go for it!

My child is a senior and had a wonderful time at WashU, socially and academically, and did really well in grad school admissions coming from WashU.

Is every admitted student invited to multicultural?

@NickDS multicultural is now celebration days, but it was focused towards non-ED minorities. WashU will still fly out non-ED accepted students during Spring Preview

Thank you for correcting the record about TAs. It does burst a bubble, but better now than later.

An additional factor to consider, whether for good or ill (my take): WUSTL has one of the least, and perhaps the least, economically diverse student body in the US.
