all you need to do to IM a cell phone is send an IM to the number with a + in front of it… so +18003334444 and that sends a text message to someones cell phone… it’s much easier than trying to set AIM up on your cell phone because then you don’t get all of the sign off and sign on’s.

That girl seriously needs some discipline! If I were you I would give her a phone with no text messaging capabilities and a phone plan with limited minutes.

mkm,
When I see if I have a text, I can see the number that sent the message. If it is a number I don’t know or a message I don’t want to pay for, I simply do not press “read”. Instead, I have the option to just delete the unread message. (I have Cingular, if it makes any difference)

I’ll have to look when I receive next text (not like I do it alot). I think if I don’t hear it ring, it just says you have a new text message and if I don’t open it I can’t get to delete option. But like UVML said when I talked to Verizon, they charge soon as message is sent to your number, not when it is opened.

I am with you ucsd… dad. Just gave my 16 year old a cellphone for his bday last week. Instructions were no texting, phone just to keep in touch w/family. Two days into a new billing cycle and he has already received 7 text messages (no text in the plan) and used 120 minutes in less than 18 hours. Am not sure how long he will get to keep phone at this pace of use. It appears he gave the number to “everyone” despite my request that he not give the number out. I am thinking I will have 2 personal cellphones soon!!

I’ve been away…is this the “The Mom” that goes with “TheDad”?

The Mom not with CC TheDad

I know a kid who used over 14,000 text messages in one month. I’m serious and I didn’t mistype that.

mkm,
Cingular charges the sender when the message is sent, and charges the recipient when the message is opened. Maybe Verizon only charges once instead of twice like Cingular does. Anyway, my daughter was getting some prank text messages, so she simply deleted them without openening them up, and we were not charged for those.

Personally, I feel like I’m still in the two-cans-and-a-string era.

lkf725,
No, Verizon charges the sender and the recipient for the same text message and text messaging is NOT standard in the Family Share Plan.
